Ikan 8000HD

Steve,

I have one of the Ikan 8000HD monitors. I use it with my Canon XH A1 and Sony V1, particularly when using 35mm adapter. Very clear image. Good for focus. Color . . . needs work. You can manually adjust color, brightness, etc., but it never seems quite right. Don't count on it for color correction.

With F970 battery it adds a lot of weight and makes it tricky getting balance. If you tilt the screen at all it changes the center of gravity quite a bit and requires rebalancing. With the shade kit it also catches a lot of wind and will cause the camera to shake or skew. I never use it for run-and-gun shots . . . too cumbersome.

The above problems notwithstanding, it is a decent field monitor for critical focus work. Indoors it is easy to see and use for framing up shots without hovering over the camera's little LCD.

I am thinking about fabricating a mount for my rails system to allow mounting the monitor under the camera. Top mounting using the shoe mount is ok, but makes the whole rig rather top-heavy and cumbersome.

Finally: An F970 battery will only last an hour or so when the unit is on. Even when off, it drains the battery pretty quickly. When not in use I remove or slide the battery off the contacts. BTW - Sliding the battery in and out of the bracket on the back can be a real bear until things loosen up with use. It requires both hands and a lot of force to remove.
