View Full Version : pricing petition
Brian Arwari April 23rd, 2006, 09:18 PM Jim, how about a special pricing for dvinfo members. Your profit wouldn’t differ, if you set aside a few units and skipped distribution middleman. It would be an inexpensive way to have great grassroots publicity. There are people from all over the world on this forum (I live in Italy), as well as people involved every aspect of the video industry. I understand it couldn’t be extended to the thousands of members, but you could set some sort of criteria… just a thought.
Guys let’s get a petition going!

Matthew Wauhkonen April 23rd, 2006, 10:30 PM We don't even know the price yet and already it's too high?
I'm all for discounts of any kind, but this seems kind of silly.
Jim Jannard April 23rd, 2006, 11:42 PM There won't be any discounts and there aren't any middlemen. I hope that everyone recognizes the price/performance ratio just doesn't get any better than this...
Jim
Chris Hurd April 23rd, 2006, 11:47 PM The price itself is the discount. When it's announced tomorrow, compare it to any other 4K camera.
Oops, there really aren't any other 4K cameras.
And the great grassroots publicity is already here!
Rob McCardle April 24th, 2006, 01:53 AM No middlemen, Jim ?
ok - I can live with that ! :)
What about service and support, though ?
Only so much can be done with firmware ....
Eric Peltier April 24th, 2006, 03:20 AM Jim,
How bout the first Red camera as a prize at the Flamingo or Caesar Palace poker table ? :)
what do you say?
I'd rather see that than the last Corvette or lexus.

Exactly. Perhaps the schematics/blueprint/servicemanual can be distributed in some way? Or how about plugging my future Red-camera into the Internet and the guys at Red can access it online and check what's wrong and either transfer patched firmware or say that component x need to be replaced and who can fix the problem. I think that's how they fix some cars today.
Frank Hool April 25th, 2006, 05:15 PM Jim, how about a special pricing for dvinfo members.
that would cause storm assault to get dvinfo board member.
James Llewellyn April 25th, 2006, 05:21 PM I think Jim's given special treatment enough with the fact he's making this camera to begin with.
Mathieu Ghekiere April 25th, 2006, 05:53 PM I think Jim's given special treatment enough with the fact he's making this camera to begin with.
Indeed. I can't afford this camera also, but geesh... The camera is 4x times as good as a Cinealta and 5 times (I repeat... 5 TIMES!) as cheap as one.
It's almost the same price as a SDX900 from Panasonic.
And people still complain about price?
This camera has been made as cheap as possible, concerning the price. Be happy, people, you would never get this from one of the big companies!
Wes Vasher April 25th, 2006, 06:29 PM This is probably a silly idea but I could imagine a RED sponsored program for renting cameras to students at affordable rates. RED would set aside a certain number of cameras that they'd rent out to student filmmakers for their projects on a per film basis. You submit an application/project description and supporting documents of enrollment and if selected you could rent a camera for say a week to shoot your project and it'd be a price that wouldn't break the bank. This could be a neat way to get the RED into young film makers' hands and even get some publicity.
You would have to charge to make sure those renting were serious enough but not a $1500/day fee.
Though the amount of work to run a program like this is probably more than it's worth but as a student it's fun to day dream sometimes!
Frank Hool April 26th, 2006, 03:21 AM The camera is 4x times as good as a Cinealta and 5 times (I repeat... 5 TIMES!) as cheap as one.
Here's the reason why people doubt sometimes! This is major breaking and ingoring market, technonology and evolution rules.
Brian Arwari April 26th, 2006, 03:23 PM Hi all, just to be clear on what I meant. I wasn't at all complaining about the price, I think the price performance ratio is awsome. I wasn't even suggesting that Jim take a cut on profits. What I intended to say is that the distrubutor/ final sales store makes a percentage (usually around 30%). What I suggested was that Jim take say a dozen cameras and curb that 30% to the most prominent members of this forum. This would leave his end of the profit untouched. Actually if he didn't curb the whole 30% but let's say 20% he'd make an even greater profit.
I wasn't suggesting he'd give a discount to every member, just a few, and I wasn't of course including myself.
My reason for suggesting this is that I'd like to see the camera in Chris Hurd's and some other experienced people's hands so that the whole forum could get thier take on it, have videos posted... well, you get the idea.
Brian
Rob Lohman April 26th, 2006, 04:39 PM I am sure that some prominent figures will be shooting with the prototypes
and final versions as soon as they are "available". Jim seems to know his
marketing so I'm sure it will be in testers / reviewers hands as soon as it is
good to go.
Luis Caffesse April 26th, 2006, 11:19 PM What I intended to say is that the distrubutor/ final sales store makes a percentage (usually around 30%). .....
From what I understand the plan is to sell cameras directly to end users with no middleman, hence no 'distributor percentage.' It seems they are really doing everything possible to put this camera out there at the lowest feasible price.... for everybody
