I haven't seen anything official pertaining to dynamic range. Has anything been stated what the sensor is capable of at NAB yet? Is it as good as film, does it surpass film?

View Full Version : Dynamic Range? Brian Harbauer April 24th, 2006, 05:56 PM I haven't seen anything official pertaining to dynamic range. Has anything been stated what the sensor is capable of at NAB yet? Is it as good as film, does it surpass film? Chris Hurd April 24th, 2006, 06:54 PM 66db dynamic range is the spec, I believe it's 12 stops. Ashley Cooper April 24th, 2006, 07:35 PM I remain confused about dynamic range. The Silicon Imaging camera announced recently claims 10 f-stops of dynamic range, which they say is about 2000:1. I was (and still am) puzzled b/c John Jackman's lighting book lists the 'contrast ratios' of the human eye to film and video as much lower. The human eye was supposed to resolve 1000:1, film 500:1 (probably closer to 250:1), and prosumer video around 64:1. So, I was wondering, how does Red compare with film and other digital cams with regards to dynamic range? Thanks for any help! Rob Lohman April 24th, 2006, 07:42 PM If I remember correctly it was said that it's gonna be somewhere inbetween 11 - 15 stops. It supports 10-bit log. Brian Harbauer April 24th, 2006, 11:59 PM Thanks guys, I saw 66db, but I wasn't sure how that was interpeted into stops. 12 stop? Hmmm, I hoped for more, but maybe that will change. That's an aspect I'm very interested in. Thanks for the updates. Graeme Nattress April 25th, 2006, 01:28 AM >66db, somewhere between 11-15 stops. Stops are hard to measure - different ways of doing it. db can be measured, so we're quoting minimum db spec. Graeme Simon Wyndham April 25th, 2006, 02:48 AM Either way, those are damn good specs, and I want one! Just hope my current production sells well so I can put down a deposit! Chris Hurd April 25th, 2006, 11:55 AM Yes it was 11-15 stops. Thanks Rob and Graeme for the clarification! Brian Harbauer April 25th, 2006, 01:16 PM 11-15!? Amazing! For digital that just truely amazing! Really looking foward to those frame grabs this fall! |
