View Full Version : Is there anything the RED camera can't do?!
Ben Winter April 25th, 2006, 07:55 PM I mean this as a serious question.
I'm a student, and now that all the RED specs have been released, I was curious if, from a professional's point of view, there was anything that "would've been nice to have but whatever, I'll make do" with the RED camera. I'm afraid I'm not experienced enough to know.
Because...it seems to me...that a 35mm sensor doing 4k+ 4:4:4, as well as all the other magic this camera touts, is the most anyone could ask at this point in time...but I mean the whole camera including lens mounts, acquisition, etc. There's definately a whole lot this camera can do...but I was curious if there was anything that, realistically or otherwise, this camera would benefit from having.
Eirik Tyrihjel April 25th, 2006, 08:03 PM it is IMPOSSIBLE to say at this time, we need to see footage, we need to see it in work, if it works (which i beleive/and hope it will) we need to see comparions between this and 35 mm / varicam, and whatever is out there by the time RED is released!
Matthew Wauhkonen April 25th, 2006, 10:48 PM Optical viewfinder would be the big thing. But it's not worth all the money it would cost to implement.
Jim Jannard April 26th, 2006, 12:48 AM I hope the list of things our camera WON'T do is short. We spent a lot of time and energy to design and build one with "no excuses". It doesn't have either a mechanical shutter or an optical finder. We thought long a hard about that one. Our including "Surroundview", where you can see outside the recording area, was our way of giving part of what gives an optical finder an advantage... but without the cost or maintenance of the shutter.

Mike Tesh April 26th, 2006, 01:43 AM Wouldn't a high resolution/high laditude electroinic viewfinder do pretty much the same thing? There is only so much resolution the human eye can see in something as small as a viewfinder. I understand it's probably more of a laditude issue but still.
Jim Jannard April 26th, 2006, 01:52 AM We continue to search for the best EVF solution possible. Good news is that there is a provision on the camera to add it when we find it. Just bolt it on the camera body or any of the cages and plug it in.

Marvin Emms April 26th, 2006, 02:19 AM Ben,
I do not see 4:4:4 at 4k anywhere on the site, point me to it if there is, my understanding is that it is a colour mask chip (Bayer or something similar) and thus only does 4:4:4 at 1/4 res or below (half horizontal, half vertical, potentially more than 2k but rather less than 4k)
George Ellis April 26th, 2006, 06:50 AM Jim, we are all waiting for the Oakley RedVision Bluetooth HD Monitor with UVA/B protection and scratch resistant lenses, mirror coating optional :P

You're right, I meant 4:4:4 at 2k.

Rory Hinds April 26th, 2006, 10:21 AM Isn't the real advantage of an optical viewfinder that it doesn't kill your eye?
Looking at a LCD for extended periods of time isn't as calming on the eye as a optical viewfinder, watching the world in reality.
Or is this just a perceived advantage?

Rory

Frank Hool April 27th, 2006, 01:33 PM How much parts RED will manufacture by itself? How much there is left to OEMs or suppliers? And how much to 3rd party? Is there anything binding about creating new standards? Who will develope software support to NLE-s?
Who will work on creating for instance directshow support. What are those companies wich will work on complete new standards.
Joseph Aurili April 27th, 2006, 01:36 PM It can't make an espresso, can it???
j/k
I read somewhere that 2k+ would only record to RAW. Is that true?
