View Full Version : How much for post-production?
Jong W. Lee April 26th, 2006, 04:13 AM RED sounds good in acquisition side...
But, can somebody explain how much hard drive is needed for post-production?
2K?
1080p uncompressed?
and/or 1080p 4:2:2 (or 4:4:4 if there's one)?
How do we do it?
realistically... how much hard drive are we talking about here?...
in order to finish 100min feature film?
Let's say, one is already equipped with fastest G5+video card+proper 3rd party capture devices...and etc....
Eirik Tyrihjel April 26th, 2006, 04:47 AM I beleive it was appleinsider.com who speculated that the upcoming Final cut version 6, would also be released in an "extreme" version, requiring the latest intelmac due later this year, and that this extreme version would target users of the upcoming RED camera... (As well as stealing more business away from Avid)
The Final Cut Extreme packaged is rumored to be approx 10K US$
Roy Dillon April 26th, 2006, 06:03 AM Well final Cut extreme is what I think was brought up by think secret in an article that said the camera would cost much more then $20,000. Also what if I want to edit on Avid, Premiere, Vegas or some other NLE.
Mathieu Ghekiere April 26th, 2006, 06:07 AM Yeah, Secret said the camera would cost $ 200,000 dollar :-D
Wes Vasher April 26th, 2006, 07:52 AM With Graeme working on the project one would think and hope that we won't have a PC (Windows) only workflow. Something that I hope would be possible is to edit at least REDCODE 2K video on a MacBook with Core Duo.
Apple will probably announce and or ship Intel desktops at their Developers conference in August. Wouldn't it be nice to showcase FCP 6 editing RED video on a new desktop at the show? :) Get Jim Jannard and Steve Jobs together on stage... the hype might just be too much for us to handle! (head explodes) I believe according to Mike Curtis there hasn't been discussion between RED and FCP team as of the show, hopefully that will change as the camera gets closer to shipping.
Eirik Tyrihjel April 26th, 2006, 08:05 AM Wes, Apple announced Intel core duo 17 inch macbook pro at this very NAB (The 15 inch was already out)...
Wes Vasher April 26th, 2006, 08:28 AM My second paragraph is referring to Intel Desktops.
Eirik Tyrihjel April 26th, 2006, 08:37 AM my eyes... sorry
Roy Dillon April 26th, 2006, 12:52 PM Well since the conversation seems to be drifting from post production... I hope there is some way to create low res files to edit the material. Then when finished you can link to the higher resolution files. This can allow those without G6s the ablity to edit high resolution video.
Eirik Tyrihjel April 26th, 2006, 01:41 PM When editing 4K+ material an offline/online pipeline thing seems the only reasonable way to go, say edit at SD, 720p or 1080p, then when finished let the computer render the thing in 4K+ over night (or over weekend...)
Anyway I will leave that to whoever is developing the software...
This RED camera certainly is on my mind a lot now... just can´t stop thinking about it... annoying, yet stimulating...
(edited wrong resolution)
Jaime Valles April 26th, 2006, 01:42 PM Seriously. I'll probably shoot in 2K cropped to 2.35:1 CinemaScope, but I'd love to do the editing on plain 'ol SD. Later on use an EDL to bring in the full out 2K footage, just for the necessary clips.
Either way, I don't want to edit more footage using just FireWire or USB2 HDDs. I want a RAID setup. Maybe something like this:
http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg56_satahot-swapbackup8.htm
A 4 Terabyte SATA RAID setup for around $5000. Should be plenty for 2K, right? Or do I need more? XServe?
Bill Anderson April 26th, 2006, 03:41 PM Not my strong suite, but, could there be an offline proxy access to the RAW footage for basic editing?
Jeremy Hughes April 26th, 2006, 03:46 PM I believe... that you can get 2 hours per terabyte of uncompressed 4:4:4 2k. I think its 6 hrs at 4:2:2.
Gary McClurg April 26th, 2006, 04:01 PM At the Red demo on Monday... I think it was in the post workflow room that the raw takes up half the space...
I know I'm thinking in film terms here... but I'm wondering what a one-light transfer in terms of storage would take up...
So if you could get two hours per terabyte would you get lets say get 3 hours per terabyte and then recapture the footage at the full specs once a final cut is done...
