14x canon XL manual lens

sorry if this as been asked before but is this lens any good on the XLH1

It's a fantastic lens. Whenever we had difficult rack focus shots and Steadicam work we'd use the 14x manual lens.

Canon really over engineered that lens. While they publicly say that it's only rated for SD use, they do admit that the resolution of the lens is suitable for HD work.

I can verify with our own testing that the lens does resolve well on the H1. It is a lot more contrasty than the 20x and 6x though. Just keep that in mind when swapping lenses on the same show show. We duplicated our usual preset and lifted blacks slightly to compensate.

Even with the poor viewfinder you can get sharp images with the lens

I can't say for sure how hard it was to focus in the viewfinder as I didn't operate the camera on my shoot. But we did have a 7" LCD on top of the camera that the AC primarily used. He probably could judge focus pretty accurately with that.

And I was always sitting in front of a Cinema Display constantly screaming, "SOFT!"
