camcorder/deck for SD video

Hey guys my JVC HR-DVS2 deck is about tore up.

I'm wanting to replace it with something low cost to get me by for a little while.

I am needing to be able to play and record SD 4:3 and 16:9 to this deck through firewire.

The Sony DCR-HC28 Mini DV Camcorder ($189 at B&H) I believe will do what I need but wanted to get ya'lls expert opinion.

So what would ya'lls choice be on a cheap deck/camera?

Thanks
Brad

There isn't really a cheap deck. The DSR-11 retails for ~$1800 and can be obtained used for ~$1100....

Thanks for your reply but that's more machine than I need for just SD video. Got to have something lower cost so I can buy some other things too. ha ha

That's the point really - decks are pricey. The inexpensive option is a low-end/used camcorder rather than a deck, such as the one you mentioned.

I understand being on a budget, but there's really no DV deck that is more robust and responsive than a DSR-11. For instance, if you try to batch capture
using a camcorder like the one you mentioned (or most all camcorders for that matter) you'll realize they aren't designed for such a thing because the transports are just doga**'d slowww and most of the time can't find preroll and/or in points. You'll forget about trying to batch & just do straight captures. Then again, if you don't need batch capability, then my point is moot.
