New Red firmware: beta build 15

Red has released firmware 15: http://www.red.com/support/release_history/7

Simultaneous RED-EVF, RED-LCD and HD-SDI/HDMI outputs, frame rates up to 120 fps in 2k mode, a new focus assist mode, and several other features.

I'd link to some discussions on Reduser but that board seems to be down at the moment... overloaded, perhaps.

I think perhaps the time has come to just replace this entire forum with a link to Reduser.

if it's not costing you extra overhead I'd vote to keep it. Sure Reduser has vastly more traffic, but that's not always a good thing. I think your signal-to-noise ratio here is better.

...besides which, as mentioned Reduser is down at the moment- where else can I go to get my fix? :-)

Reduser loads just fine for me right now: http://www.reduser.net/forum/index.php

What I have to look at is how relevant are the discussions threads here and how frequent they are... in other words, what is its value. If the majority of threads are just links to Reduser discussions, then the community is better served by simply replacing this forum with a link to Reduser and directing Red-related traffic to them by default (after all, where better to find out what's going on than the official site). I'm not interested in maintaining a board that's no longer thriving, and the vast majority of content in this forum is obsolete and best described as prehistoric. I wouldn't want somebody to form an opinion about Red based on the long-outdated content that fills this board.

I'm of the opinion that the time has come to archive what's here and provide a top-level redirect to Reduser (a thoroughly unprecedented move for DV Info Net, by the way). But if enough folks want to have a say in this, I'm happy to throw up a poll and let our readers vote for what they want us to do, and I'll honor that outcome no matter which way it goes. It all comes down to how everyone's needs are best met. DV Info Net has not been and never will be a spring-board for other forum sites. Reduser threads need to be discussed on Reduser, not here. If a top-level redirect is the best way to serve that interest, then I'm all for it. But if we need to conduct a poll about it then just let me know.

I'm surprised how little RED discussion there is here currently. A couple of sites that I'm a member are quite busy discussing aspects of the camera.

Chris,

I'd recommend waiting until after NAB to reconsider. The Scarlet intro might change the dynamics.

My guess is that most of the valuable discussion right now is by people who actually own the ONE. And they're at RED's site. I don't go there, since the ONE is out of budget, and I'm not interested in the fine details. I'm interested in the announcements and developments though. I personally don't want to wade through a ton of traffic.

Scarlet will potentially have a much larger appeal - and one that overlaps directly with the middle of your market.

Yes, I remember checking this forum a few days ago and thinking, "Gee whiz, this forum's deader than a doornail."

Then I checked the PMW-EX1 forum and thought, "This is the most thriving forum on DV Info."

What's the difference?

Other members might like to supply their own answers to this, but mine is:

a) A LOT of DV Info members own and use the PMW-EX1
b) The PMW-EX1 is fully featured and out of beta

I've tried to encourage the very few DV Info members who own/use RED to post their info in this forum, but this has come to nothing. And I think the fact that the RED Digital Cinema Camera Company actually uses reduser.net as their TOOL to oversee their beta testing as they release each new build, etc., etc., also works against them posting here.

And the real strength of DV Info is apparent when its members give the nitty-gritty about a camera or piece of gear (from acquisition to workflow).

Every new piece of gear (especially cutting edge) has it's problems. As the various members of DV Info post their solutions, the collective knowledge about this gear expands and evolves.

I can't stand "fluff", so maybe it's best to archive this forum UNTIL we get enough members owning/using RED and they post about their real-world problems (or queries) and solutions.

In the meantime, perhaps members could post about their actual RED experiences/workflows, etc. in the "Digital Cinema General Discussion" forum and, when the traffic on RED picks up and is meaningful, bring the RED forum "out of mothballs" and restore it to the HD and UHD section.

I still believe that the RED forum will really "come into its own" on DV Info once the RED camera is more broadly adopted by our members.

But until then ...?

Maybe this forum needs more direct connection with the RED team? If that is the case, please ask more questions. I visit here often. I like Chris. I like this forum. I'm here. Ask away.

Well then, Jim:
Will she be as beautiful as her name?
I know, still a month 'til NABmes... But maybe you could post a pic of the box?

And Chris, please keep this forum. Once > 5000 or so are "served" there will be more traffic. And for now, not owning a RED but being very eager to learn about any news, the links to the important things on reduser.net are quite useful for me.

I am so much more at home here than on Reduser.net, it's not even funny. I go there for information, but my people are here.

The Fedex man is bringing my RED camera this morning. I'll help you jump-start the forum, Chris.

And I'll be shooting my next UWOL entry on RED, just for the practice and to see how far up the mountain in my backyard that I can carry the darn thing...

It's true, what everyone else has said, that you should wait before a re-direct to Reduser--maybe just put up a sticky with the One Big Link--

But consider that less than 1,000 cameras have shipped so far. It's too early to consider pulling the plug on the forum here. And, as someone mentioned, SCARLET may pull in a much broader user base and more traffic.

The DVinfo advantage:

Less ego, more filling.

No one here is going to lecture me on what an unschooled idiot I am for desiring a decent single system audio recording or for not using a focus puller...

A vote for keeping

I vote for keeping this forum alive as it feels a little more "free" in terms of expressing opinions without fear of being called a "naysayer". I love what Red is doing, but I also love what Silicon Imaging (and I'm sure, soon, others) are doing.

I am partnering in a Red camera that should be delivered any time now, and I'd love to be able to post my thoughts on it as compared to the SI-2K without feeling like I'm going to hurt anyone's feelings. I have no interest in trashing either camera, as I rent the SI and intend to rent the Red. But I want to feel like I can say that the SI is better than the Red in such and such a situation, and the opposite in another situation. I would welcome disagreements and discussions about my personal opinion, but I don't want fan boys taking things personally and getting upset.

Also, Jim said he likes me ... oh ... that's another Chris. :)

Anyway, that is my vote. Thanks.

I also feel much more at home at Dvinfo then at Reduser, but Reduser really has a wealth of information, so I check it every day.

But I would really hope there would be much more traffic around here too. Jim, I think having some more announcements made here as well as on Reduser could *maybe* help the traffic around here.

I agree about keeping the forum here, the RED forum is great, but it's very traffic heavy and sometimes difficult to find out more basic information.

I agree about Jim dropping some of the announcements on here personally every now and again that would certainly help.

Also if Meryem wants to post his experiences as a new RED user here that would be great if he has the time. After all DVinfo played some part in the birth of RED didn't it?

Scarlet is one of the coolest projects I have ever worked on... and I have worked on quite a few. I think it will be quite a surprise. NAB 2008, baby!

You could send Rob Lohman over here since this was his 'home base' for so long. Rob is a good guy, has been a great contributor to this site in its infancy and I was glad you took him aboard the RED team.

Just my .02,
