Red Delivery and Rugedness
Hi all, I'm ordering a red camera soon, my first question is;
How rugged are they? I mean if you have the Flash drive (not the raid array) does it still easily drop frames if shook about? For that matter how sturdy is the cameras build itself? I know if you drop it on the floor it's a goner but is it say as sturdy as a a good Sony shouldermount? I have a DSR 500 and that things been banged around so much but still delivers everytime. Also, for all those who ordered how long was your delivery? They're saying at the moment 6 months but someone I know is now on month seven. Is it getting better? Apologies if Im rising old points here. Thanks all. Last edited by David Ellison; March 13th, 2008 at 06:29 PM. |

From what I've heard the camera is robust. You need to check out the accessories options, because there seems to be some QC issues currently with the some of RED ones, but that might be sorted soon. There are 3rd party accessory manufacturers worth considering.
There have been delays in delivery, which can be put down to the camera still being developed and quite a few people seem to be happy waiting until this settles down. However, the production seems to be ramping up, but you'll need to check with for the current estimates for delivery times. The hard drive seems to be prone to drop frames if handled roughly. |

David, if you drop the RED camera on the floor, your floor is in baaad trouble - the camera is probably still fine ;-)
It´s built like a tank! No plastic fantastic whatsoever. If you shoot to Compact Flash cards you get no drops, at 8Gbs each you can get roughly 5mins+ of 4K. If you order now, I guess you´d get a serial in the 3500++ range, they are now serving 750-1000 and have been serving roughly 500 a month, my guess is that you´ll get your camera around july at best, maybe a few months more. RED has had a tendency to announce a tad to overly optimistic schedules in the past... (which is probably why they got so far so fast in the first place) Good luck! |
