RED L.A. User Group

This is a bit late but we had the first RED Los Angeles User Group meeting at Kappa Studios on March 15th at Kappa Studios in Burbank.

The event was attended by more than 200 people. There were 4 REDs, Assimilate Scratch, Avid DS, a bunch of final cuts, demonstrations, Q&As and much more.

The next meeting will probably take place after the NAB. Pictures and information about the past event:

Last minute additions

We're excited to announce several last minute additions to the June 14th RED Los Angeles User Group meeting.

Crimson Workflow™ will present a lucky winner with a door prize worth $190. Your odds of walking away with this indispensible software utility are high. RED post production without Crimson is like eating a soup with a fork.

Nature cinematographer Ken Corbin will screen his underwater RED footage and talk about using RED in harsh environments. Ken will also demonstrate his underwater housing for RED ONE.

From Russia With Love - the Lomo Anamorphic 235 Primes with PL mount. See and touch the 50mm version at the user group meeting. This is the lens used to shoot the Nescafe spot featured on RedRelay.net.

Also remember the first meeting of the "Owners Circle" roundtable. This is open to all attendees, but the topics are focused on owner issues including rental rates, client education, tips, and tactics.

Director of Photography Ian Bloom will join us via video link to talk about Crimson Workflow™ and take audience questions.

We have a fantastic lineup for you this month and a $580 Video Breakout Box giveaway.

Ted Schilowitz from RED Digital Cinema will demonstrate and discuss the new features of Build 16. Although we'll have two back-to-back presentations make sure you arrive early and grab a seat. We had an overwhelming interest in Ted's session the last time he was in the house.

We are delighted to host Element Technica's RED Hand-Held Rig product launch. Be the first to experience the new precision-engineered system designed to conform to the operator’s shoulder while keeping the Red One camera in the most balanced and stable position possible.

This will be the first public display of the Hand-Held Rig from Element Technica. Their staff will be on hand to answer questions and help attendees demo the rig. Four different hand-held configurations will be available for demo.

The new Shock-Isolated Red Drive Mount will also be on display. The new mount isolates the Red drive from vibrations and allows continued recording without dropped frames.

This month's door prize this is Element Technica’s Video Break-Out Box. This $580 accessory was donated by Element and is an essential piece of equipment for any Red camera. The Break-Out Box converts the mini-coax connectors to industry standard HD-SDI BNC connectors.

Renowned director of photography David Mullen, ASC will discuss his latest RED ONE project at an informal round table and answer questions. David's recent work includes Akeelah and the Bee for Lions Gate, The Astronaut Farmer for Warner Brothers, and the second season of Big Love for HBO.

New this month is Members' Showcase. Several of our members will show and discuss scenes from their recent projects shot on RED ONE. If you'd like to have your material considered for screening at a future date Members' Showcase please email us or contact Igor at 818.843.3400.

The Owners' Circle will gather at the end of the meeting as usual. This forum will provide the RED ONE owners with an opportunity to discuss various RED related topics in person in a non-moderated environment. The Owners' Circle is open to all RED LAUG members.

Special thanks to eCinema Systems for providing High Definition displays. There will be a suggested $5 donation to help with the cost of breakfast and refreshments.

The summer may be coming to a close but the things are just heating up at the RED L.A. User Group.

Adobe is announcing the RED support soon and Kevan O'Brian is coming to the meeting to brief us on the developments.

In this RED L.A. User Group exclusive presentation Kevan will go over the Adobe Premiere and After Effects upcoming features. He will discuss how Adobe Production Premium package can be used as an all-in-one solution and how it can augment the existing RED workflows. Another exciting topic Kevan will address is the ability of Production Premium to provide VFX previsualisation on the set.

A lucky User Group member will have an opportunity to test all the new features because Adobe is providing this month's generous door prize worth $1,700 -- the Creative Suite® Production Premium.

James Matthers will be talking about his experiences with the RED ONE in practical operations on various feature films. James is a director of photography and the president and co-founder of the Digital Cinema Society.

Digital Monolith's Chris Swartz will show their Digital Cinema Archive location data backup device. This box is all you need to provide dailies backups on location.

Marc Salomon and Justin T. Ostensen of Visionlogic 4k will present their recent RED commercial and music video work at Members' Showcase.

This month CineForm's CTO and co-founder David Newman will demonstrate the company's online 4K post-production workflow for Red One. In his presentation David will demonstrate and discuss CineForm's online 4K workflow for both Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro.

CineForm is sponsoring a door prize of either Prospect 4K (Windows) worth $1999 or Neo 4K (Mac) worth $999, to be chosen by the winner.

Supporting elements of CineForm’s Red workflow include Express Files for reducing required compute power, plus non-destructive Active Metadata as a tool to non-destructively manage portions of your color workflow including White Balance and 3D LUTs. Through its AVI and MOV wrapper compatibility, CineForm files and associated workflow elements are both cross-platform and cross-applications compatible, leveraging many existing industry tools including Iridas, Synthetic Aperture, Combustion, and others.
