This is everything on Big Jon's FAQs on the Scarletuser forums. Just thought I'd put it on these forums for everyone to see.

Mining for the new information, here is what I found:

* Under 3 lbs.
* External ports for other recording options
* 1080p RGB recording
* Bullet proof ;)
* Will support 32 GB cards
* Half hour per 32 GB card (roughly 1 GB per minute => ~136 mbps)

I hope their development is continuing smoothly.

Where do I sign up to become a beta tester. :)

I have been hesitant to buy a digital film camera but it looks like this could be the one I go for.
Maybe not quite the digital equivalent of my Bolex but close enough. :)

But you can't hand crank a Scarlet! (On second thought that would be a great feature for a digital camera.)

The Kinetta was being marketed with that option.

Currently it looks like film will be around for a while yet, they're still making the cameras and you can get great rental deals.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't hand crank Scarlet. What with possibilities of USB, Firewire, or heck, even wi-fi control, the possibilities are endless.

It's hard to imagine that Scarlet would not allow external-controlled speed ramps, if ramping is part of the equation at all. Much ado was made about faster frame rates, but so far ramping has not been mentioned. If that is the case, it would be rather trivial to tie that in to something like this:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate

Or, maybe this:

http://www.contourdesign.com/shuttlepro/

Or, maybe some other USB crank interface that hasn't even been invented yet. Truly, I think this hand-crank feature is over-requested. Yeah, everybody loved that scene in Dracula. And wasn't there some goofy speed ramping stuff at the head of Saving Private Ryan? Other than that, I'm not sure how often it would get used.

Personally, I'd much rather have 2, 3 or 4 speeds programmable, then triggered either automatically from a laptop or handheld, or manually from some wired or wireless controller. If the ramps were all controlled in software, there's really no reason you couldn't even draw out speed ramps with bezier curves in software, then triggered wirelessly to the camera.

I can imagine watching an action scene play out, then hitting the (mouse, keyboard, iphone) button to trigger my pre-programmed ramp to 48, than again to trigger the slow-ish, accelerating ramp to, say, 112, then another to trigger the quick ramp back to 24. Lots of possibilities for super-cool stuff there...

While that's true in theory, it's much easier to design your firmware for a fixed rate than a variable one. Lots of stuff has to happen between each frame interrupt, and there's no room for error. And who knows what hardware limits are imposed by the sensor and memory controller.

I think ramping would need to be in the spec from day one to make it viable. If halfway through the development somebody said, "oh, by the way, make the framerate rampable", the engineers would fall off their chairs and the schedule would unravel.

That's not to say that I wouldn't like the feature. ;)

Well, yes and no. You need a lot of light at that rate - especially if you want low noise and a narrow aperture for a deep field. And you need a lot of fast storage.

I wouldn't use it often, but 180 fps would definitely rock for certain scenes.
