What a great time to get an alternative camera into the market - hope you can get it here sooner rather than later ...

So - Go Jim and all the best !

As an aside - do Red have plans to offer something for us poor boys ?
Seriously ... same technology, smaller package ?
Mega-dittos on this one! I recently purchased a Canon Xl-H1 because it was the least "Japanese" of the current offerings...and I will explain what I mean by that.

I think there is something inherent in Japanese culture that is fairly pluralistic in nature and particularly when it comes to business competition. It almost seems like the camera companies are a bit of a cartel, and divide things up in a very even, face-saving way. There is a creeping incrementalism that's pretty obvious to me. That said, I bought the H1 because I thought it took the biggest leap in the "affordable" category without too many major compromises...but again, that's a conditioned response to the way these companies do business. I chose the H1 because it's Canon's flagship camera and I think they didn't have much of a virtual ceiling for the engineers to reach. (given a 1/3" camera limitation) I still think they took dead-aim at HDCAM and came up with something very, very close for the money.

I wish the RED team all the best in their quest. Everyone wants you to succeed...with the possible exception of the camera cartel.

Jim- You had asked for designers and artists to submit various projects for Red. Due to the fact nobody has a clue what Red is yet, it was an impossible task. However, perhaps you could still offer a select few to submit, under a non-disclosure clause. When NAB rolls around, you will have the material in hand, and can announce the winner... and a grand prize of the first working cam?

Hi Wayne,

it was a thread Jim opened, but he deleted it, because he thought it was indeed impossible to ask this if people don't know enough about Red.
Maybe, after NAB, the idea returns.

Can you fill me in on the details, I did some thinking for various casings and control issues during the Digital Cinema camera days (that long ago now) and have designs in mind for various form factors. So what ever shape and size it, practically, comes in, I can probably come up with something, but mainly for single case cameras. I deal a lot with advanced design concepts. It will take me longer to learn a new 3D CAD package then to come up with a design.

One thing I must note through, that somewhere on Obin's camera thread somebody posted a link to a potential camera case design that i quiet liked. It is something in the realm of the JVC HD100 (probably smaller) two level colour scheme, I forget if it was red or green on the top two thirds and grey or silver down the bottom, a nice dynamic sort of curve division between the two colours. That would be a nice case for a large documentary camera with limited drives. Obin reads in this forum, maybe he can direct us to who did it (there are too many posts).

Thanks

Wayne.

Hi Wayne,

the designs that Jim was talking about was about their website, and making folders and video's and such. I don't think it was about the camera itself.

my mistake...

I thought it would be great to invite work from this talented pool of members... and compensate those who generated work we could use. But it was pointed out to me that there really wasn't enough info I could leak out to give anyone a fair shot at success. That is true. Unless you can see the camera and the details of what we are doing, it is shooting in the dark at f22 with gain off.

My bad. After we release pics of the system at NAB, we might resurrect the idea. One thing that is for sure, we will have a section of our site dedicated to users of our camera and their work. We'll brag about the "big names" shooting with our camera and provide a showcase for aspiring DP's to show their great work.

I cannot wait for NAB. It is pretty exciting around here. We are scrambling 24/7 and seeing progress everyday on each aspect of development. We have two targets. 1st is to show that we can do this at NAB. 2nd is to present a finished production model by the end of the year.

Jim

Thanks Jim, I am still curious exactly what it was about though, Mathieu mentioned website, but what is this making videos/folders stuff?

Wayne- They wanted everything- website, trifolds, logos... everything. But without the camera specifics, it is hard to do.

Don't forget IBC, Jim! September ain't exactly the end of the year, but that's a "can't miss" show in my book. As if you need an excuse to go to Amsterdam.

Jim, I hope to meet you at NAB. I'm directing a feature in the fall (October to Mid-November) with a DP that was featured in Kodak's cinematography magazine for his work. I told him I want to shoot with Red instead of Super16 and he likes the idea. Since the production model probably won't be released by early fall, would you consider throwing us a bone and let us work with a slight pre-release model if we beg and plead? I'd even pay full retail for the pre-release unit just so we can fit this into our production schedule. I'm tired of shooting on film. It's just too cumbersome nowadays.

Thanks to you and your team.

Is there one in Australia you could come along too? Their is at least one indie publication, one cinematography, and probably something for broadcasters, to get pre-coverage over here.

Hey Jim, you might consider talking to Dana Brown.
Look at the pic, that looks like an O on the temple piece... ;)
He has shot and put about every kind of footage together. With Step in Liquid, Endless Summer II, and Dust to Glory in his portfolio...

True, IBC is a must - but last year was disapointing: no working HVX, no HL1, no revolution...
Sounds like you really have to come over here hehehe

So does that mean that the RED lenses will go to f22, and the camera will have a 'gain' option?

Okay, obviously I'm just kidding ... I'm just dying for any additional information I can get.
:)

Best of luck getting everything together for NAB.
Wish I could be there.
