NAB News from DV Info Members?

I'm hoping some DV Info members at NAB might post any news flashes they come up with. Whats up there in Vegas ?

Yes, I can't get there, but there area number of things I would have liked to know. I am scanning the exhibitors news releases at the nab site, but this only gets the filtered news and their are a number of things that turn up there.

Maybe dvinfo could start up a thread next year where people who can't attend, could ask for people to keep an eye out for booths, products or subjects?

For instance, I have even been told by people from Sony distributors they expected new Sony cameras at NAB (HC5/7/FX2 etc).

Ambarella is supposed to be showing their with their h264 camera codec/capture chips.

JVC, showed a Hard drive Everio High Definition camera, but it's release has still been delayed.

The local Colorspace cinema camera is their but they still haven't updated their website.

Not to mention the people waiting for new Canon GL3/XM3 cameras?


Has anybody heard of any of these things, or can anybody have a look?

Canon camera announcements don't happen at NAB. The consumer division is not here, just the broadcast division pitching new lenses. The XLH1 and XL2 are found in their booth but not the GL2. You might expect something to be announced at DVEXPO East in July, but even that's not a sure fire time frame.

Nothing much is new this year. Lots of minimal upgrades or none at all. The most exciting things this year are the RED, Ultra-high definition displays, 3D cinema, and the new JVC HD cameras. There was a really cool surprise with this tiny mini camera that could do 720p and 1080p but I can't remember the name of the brand. I'll have to review my GL1 footage of it. But put two fingers together and that's how big it was on all sides. Other than that, I haven't seen anything that would make me go "Whoo-hoo!". But I'm a filmmaker, there's probably all sorts of new stuff for broadcasters and radio people.

Jack: Did you see the Catapult device--- supposed to interface between camera and USB drive to allow tapeless recording ?

No, who makes that? I'll be sure to check tommorow. I didn't have enough time today, I went there to find something for a friend and I got so caught up looking for Samy's camera when everything started to close down. A wasted day =P. Oh well, I'll have more time tommorow.

Jack, that thin HD camera is the one I am interested in. If it's H264 15Mb/s plus, it should be as good as HDV in nearly all situations and maybe even better in most (we are talking about the motion and ripples/waves problems here).

If any body can tell me that would be appreciated.

Jack, Have you managed to find out the camera from the footage yet, be good if we could find out, because then we can send somebody to interrogate them ;)

Is this the small camera that you saw Jack, I think I have seen this before but I can't remember the price. Pity that it is only POV.

Yup, it was at the Iconix booth. The footage was great on it. I don't see why you couldn't use it for filmmaking purposes, I can see it as a B-camera sort of thing in a studio enviroment.

I understand that it is around $16K. I would much rather buy a Red camera instead. If it was $1.6K it would still be scraping it, because the minimum price for a HD capable uncompressed camera without capture device is below that. It admittedly is a three chip.

When it gets down to it, there's no other camera I know of that could give me the quality I saw on that HDTV while being so incredibly tiny. You're paying for the size, like many tiny consumer cameras are sold even though they don't offer better quality than lesser priced models, not so with this camera. Sure, this camera isn't for everyone, nor do I believe it is meant to be the sole camera for a shoot. Somebody must be buying these things because they'd have to make it for a reason. =)

But the obvious show stealer this year was the RED, an obvious A-camera, so I don't think you could compare this to that.

It looks nice. In the video market there might not be any competitors. In the video market there is significant margin fro plug and play video.

It looks like a camera without a capture unit, there are many industrial cameras of similar size (without the video converter box) that would give as good, or better picture, at a lot cheaper price, even with capture. It is possible to feed uncompressed from the HC1, FX1, and pocket HD cameras (only $799 HD1 on the market at the moment, and format of its output is unknown, but expect decreasing quality for decreasing price). The SI 2/3rd inch Altasens camera head would not be too much larger and off a GigE feed for a fraction of the price (less than $5K).
