Lens Hood Cap at DVinfo.net

I LOVE my XH-A1. Seriously, I think that everything about it is amazing except the lens cap. I can't tell you how many times I've had to clean a mark off of my lens after hitting it wrong with the cap. Does anyone know of an aftermarket cap that would fit on the lens hood instead of straight over the glass? I'd seriously pay good money for such a thing if only to preserve my lens.

I agree Alex.. the lens cap is a pain in the butt. I had to send my A1 to Canon no too long ago for the same reason. Lucky for me the warrantly was still good, but the lens cap issue still exists and I'm afraid it could happen again.

Lens cap for the hood.... Great idea. We used to use tupperware for our still camera lens hoods. I think I will take my A1 to WallyWorld and look around.

A kids shower cap (minus the bunnies) keeps the dust out during breaks on location.

I only thought of this myself the other day. The lens cap is fine if your not using the hood, but its way too fiddly when the hood is in place. You could do with a rubber push fit cap to go over the hood.

Great, now instead of having to admit that I lost my cap, I can tell people that I simply solved the "cap problem".

I agree too, it's bloody awful. One of the reasons why I keep my UV filter on is due the fact that my I keep knocking into the lens. I really like the Z1 /FX1 cover... heaps better. The A1 is a better camera though!!!

I agree, the lens cap with the hood in place for me either grips first time or falls out and you repeat the exercise, it is a real pain and the only real annoyance with the near perfect camera!

Those are definitely steps in the right direction. I especially like the tupperware idea since I'm envisioning something solid that could stop, say, a stick or a branch from wandering into my lens whilst traipsing through lands unknown. I wonder if it would even be possible to Vacuum-Form something. Hmmm. . .

Try cutting a square piece of foam 1.5 inches thick, 3.5 x 4 so it fits without falling out, but loose enough to pop out when you need to.

Also some dollar stores or Daiso ($2 ) stores have some hard plastic food boxes that will hold the lens hood if you take it off for wide angle adapters, etc.

I made a push fit cap using some blue Elapor foam. Seems to work well.

That's brilliant Mark, that's exactly the sort of solution I'm looking for. I'm afraid I don't know much about "Elapor foam" though, if you get time, could you elaborate a little on where one could get it and the best way to shape or cut the stuff? In the meantime, I'll be googling. Thanks!
