PC program for a beginner?

My brother in law has a ton of video of my nephew, and of course he was asking me to cut it together for him.

Frankly put, I don't have the time.

So, I figure it would be easier for me to show him how to edit it together himself.

So, does anyone have any suggestions on a good beginners program on the PC? I'm looking for something like the Windows equivalent of Imovie.

I edit on Avid, which would be way too much for what he needs to do. He just needs a basic cut/dissolve type program. Nothing fancy.

Thanks for any suggestions.
I'm a bit out of touch on what's out there at the entry level.

If he has Windows XP, you can download Microsoft Movie Maker for free.

For US$99.00 there's:

- Vegas Movie Studio + DVD
- Pinnacle Studio v9

Windows movie maker is probably the simplest free program. He might even HAVE it on his PC already, and not know it. Lots of people do.

Another one to look at would be Sony Movie Studio. It's basically the little brother to Vegas+DVD.

To add to the list?!
One can actually use Nero suite or B's Recorder DVD - both emerged as CD/DVD recording software but added DV editing abilities plus DVD authoring, plus, plus... for only around 60USD.
