The Pentium M processors for laptops perform well... as a guestimate to their performance, add 50% (or 40%?) to their clock speed. They are a little slower than the 3ghz processors, but with much better battery life.

According to the Mother Of All CPU Charts at Toms Hardware, the Prescot 550 3.4 HT is the fastest MPG rendering chip you can get without having to spend several hundered more dollars (for a marginal increase in performance at that). Coupled with the right CPU/Motherboard/RAM combo, the 550 seriously screams.

My Vegas 6 Rendertest results: 00:00:53

I would suggest the ASUS P5AD2-E Premium Motherboard with Patriot RAM for maximum throughput and functionality.

53 seconds for your processor (3.4ghz Prescott) is a little too fast? A 3.0"E" Prescott should be about 89 seconds. Your result is 67% faster... which seems to me it rendered at good quality instead of best.

I made my decision based on the speed of my son's AMD3400.

I purchased an AMD 64 3700 from New Egg on sale for Memorial Day Weekend for $289. My option was a 3.4 Pentium for more money. I certainly don't expect to break the one minute mark, however.

Quite frankly I would be happy just seeing it work in Vegas without my system getting sluggish. But running 4 instances of Vegas on one PC, each instance with the very .veg file that choked my system, is what impressed me. There is no reason a Pentium wouldn't do this but I saw it happen on my son's PC and I am going with the same thing. I will report my results whenever I receive the MB and Processor.

Well I got the AMD3700 and ran vegas6 renderetest. I rendered it at best and it did it in 1:23. Now this compares to 1:29 on my friends P4 3.0 and 1:19 on my son's AMD3400, a slower processor than mine.

I first ran my test with one stick of 512 2700 memory and got 1:24. I doubled the memmory and gained one second at 1:23.

Both other processors are running 3200 dual layer. I am running 2700 and not sure if the dual layer is working since the memory is two different brands and the ASUS motherboards are particular about the memory used.

Do my results seem right? Looking closeley at the difference between my setup and my sons he has AMD3400, running at 400Hz chip. I have a 3700 running at 333Hz. Faster MB, slower memory. We run the same model motherboard. Though it shouldn't make a difference in a rendering test, both my son and my friend with the P4 3.0 1:29 score are running ATI9800 cards, I am running a much slower GForce about the equivalent of an ATI8500 only with 64 meg of RAM.

Do you suppose if I install my son's memory in my system I will see an increase in speed that would be greater than his score?

Well I amswered my own question. I put in the 400Hz, 3200 memory to try it out and my speed increased. One second faster than my son's AMD3400 it rendered in 1:18.

Still don't know if the video card has anything to do with the speed but it's nowhere near Dan's speed with a P 3.4. I can live with this easily however since its more than 2 1/2 time faster than my old PC.

Charley, which core is your 3700+ by the way?

You can use CPU-Z to check if you aren't sure:
http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php

Run the program and look under "code name". It'll name a geographical location like "San Diego".
