LCD Cleaning?? at DVinfo.net

I am more than a little unhappy to say that the main consequence of my first attempt to clean my new TRV950 LCD screen was moderate to serious scratches on the screen.

Would folks be so kind as to recommend a cleaning method that does not suffer from the same consequences as my soft cotton cloth mildy wet with water?.

I got a package of their "iClear Screen Singles" at the Apple Store recently, cost $10 for 12 of them. This is a 2 part system where each pair includes one pre-soaked cleaning cloth plus one dry polishing cloth. They really work great at cleaning all my LCD and other screens, including Trintron CRT, 17" widescreen LCD, PowerBook, Vx-2000 and PDX-10. Actually each packet has enough mileage to clean all of these, and it's a good idea to have a bunch of screens handy when you open them since it would be a waste to just clean your 3.5" LCD with a whole cloth!

The first thing I did before I even touched my LCD screen after acquiring my PDX10 was to purchase a set of PDA screen covers and cut to fit the LCD of the PDX. I probably lose just a bit of quality as opposed to looking at an uncovered LCD, but it's nominal. I purchased a pack of 10, Belkin brand, I believe, but I'm still using the original one that I put on it.

I figure the tradeoff is well worth protecting the LCD screen from scratches, smudges, dirt, fingerprints, etc.

I'm going to order Sony's new LCD and cam cleaning kit. I'm hoping its the same material as the Sony cleaning cloth I received with my 50" LCD HDTV screen. It does a great job of cleaning (dry) with no abrasion and I also use it on my cam LCD, laptop, and LCD flat panel monitor.

ps - I don't see how you guys use those thin film plastic screen protectors. They drive me mad on PDAs and I couldn't bear them on either my camcorder or digital camera. Then again, I always pull off any plastic covering new electronics (even if it isn't mine). :)

Thank you for the posts and the information. I am going to try the PDA cover idea.

Good news though.....I remembered that ages ago I had purchased a box of ILFORD antistaticum cloths for wiping negatives before printing. Some 7 years ago I printed many, many negatives in a color darkroom and dust and scratches were my enemy.

Anyway.....the ILFORD cloth is soft, anti-static and has some type of lubricant on it.

I wiped my LCD screen carefully with this cloth.....and....voila....what I thought were scratches vanished. No idea how what appears to be a scratch can go away....but it did.

You can get ILFORD anti-staticum cloths at any pro photography store.
