How is the VL-10Li Battery Video Light?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if you all could give me some advice on a good light source for my XL1s and Gl2. Is the VL-10li good? Is there any that you would recommend? I saw some 3rd party lights on ebay that looked pretty good too. Any help would be appreciated!! thanks.

P.S.
I love this community, its great hearing from a bunch of intelligent people, it makes me feel smart:)

Hi Sam

I've asked a similar question on one of the other forums...

See it here. No replies of yet but it may give you other ideas ;)

An on camera light will give the same lighting look as taking a photo with an on camera flash ie. direct small source front lighting. As with photography with lighting will become more pleasing (depending on the effect you want) if you take the light off the camera and place it according to your artistic taste. I have a VL10li and have used it hand held (by assistant to help lighten up a shot at dusk and continuing into the night). It worked really well as I was in a location where I didn't have access to AC power and therefore couldn't use my "Dedo Lights". Therefore I consider it a great help in some situations.

If that's the little shoe mount light made by Canon I think it's fine for what it is but I've never tried the other better quality on camera lights (with barn doors etc). I'd agree with Andrew though in that anytime you're using an on camera light you're going to get
" the same lighting look as taking a photo with an on camera flash".
