The link below contains some really great documentaries that air on PBS. These are available online, in their entirety for free. There are high speed and dial up versions. You can watch sections at a time like a DVD. I would recommend viewing later in the evening when traffic is slower because I have experienced latency in the mid day to afternoon. Windows Media seems to play smoother than Real Media.

I overdosed on these a while back.

One of the best ones (and there are lots of great ones) is "The Man Who Knew" about the FBI agent who had made it his personal crusade to hunt down bin Laden and his struggles with the bureau and the intelligence culture to make al Qaeda a priority through the Clinton and the early part of the Bush inaugural period. It's quite sobering and devastating when they get to the very end when you realize what happened to him. It would make a good movie because of the man's conflicted character. However, the content is so depressing it would be a tough sell.

I'll definitely have to watch that one Keith. I really like the one's that Will Lyman (the voice) narrates. It really gets your attention and makes it that much more serious and convincing. The Wal-Mart piece was fascinating. To see how a powerhouse retailer operates and how it is destroying small businesses, especially in small towns. Another eye opener.

I don't think that's possible with these files. They are streaming files that don't download. I tried it myself. The only other way I can think of is to open them to full screen and record them from your PC via video out to an external component like a deck or whatever. My laptop has audio/video output so that's all I would have to do.

It is possible (I've done it), but you will need to grab a copy of the free SDP program for downloading streaming Windows Media files.

Once you have the program follow these directions.

1. Start the video segment (in Windows Media format) you want to download. Right click on the video as it plays and choose “Properties”. Look for the “Location:” entry at the bottom of the Properties window. Highlight and copy (Ctr+C) the URL of the video listed there.

2. Launch SDP. Click on the “Open” button and paste (Ctr+P) the video URL into the address box. Click “Ok”.

3. Now click the “Go” button. SDP will prompt you for a location to save the file. Browse to a folder and click “Save”. SDP will begin the download.

As a bonus you can even schedule downloads/recordings at a certain time. If there’s a live internet radio/video web cast in one of the Windows Media formats SDP supports, you can enter the URL of the media stream, set the start and stop time, and leave the program running while you go run errands.
