Since the first days of 5.0, I understood the Cross Dissolve reversed

Quicktime crossfade for dissolves - maybe I'm wrong and this was fixed in
5.1c, or maybe it was 4.2 - doh!
Anyway, according to Robert McCaul at Adobe (so good to have the whole

in 6.0.

In Prem 6, can you select multiple clips then copy and paste?
Robert MacCaul of Adobe wrote:
This feature didn't make it this time. You can move multiple clips using

That's a real shame Robert - is it really that hard to do? Good news on the
previews and cross dissolve though - thanks for reading, bothering and

I use P6.
Captureing DV workes fine.
Playback from Timeline works also fine includeing output to firewire.
BUT I can't play the same clip in the source monitor window or clip window.
All I get is nothing displayed. That means I can play the clip. When I stop
it and click to ie the timeline window or in the timeline monitor window I
can see the correct curent frame in the source window. But when I press the
play button in the source window it always shows the frame that I got before
when clicking to another window or it's transparent. If I try to playback a
clip with another codec (ie Pinnacle DC30) everything works fine as
expected - this clip can be played fine.
I only get the problem on my home PC (MSI 694DPro-AI dual PIII/733 with
W2K+SP1 and DirectX8a) on my office PC (NT 4.0) the same DV clip can be
played in the source window.
Does anyone have a similar Problem.

I'm not sure where I read these, but they are so true. In any escape
scene where the escapee meets a guard:
* If the escapee is a good guy, the guard's uniform will fit perfectly.
* If the escapee is a bad guy, the guard's uniform will be a size too small.
* If the escapee is a woman, the uniform will be a size too small regardless
if she is a good guy or bad guy.
Additionally, I remember an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man
where he fell into some quicksand in the jungle. He pulled himself
out and was covered with muck. Upon running behind some trees, he
came out the other side completely clean and pressed. Hillarious.

Certainly, there are those who believe that, I've no doubt. I can say that his (GL's)
admiration of Kurosawa is no secret to those who work with him and that he has on many
occasion (interviews in print/visual media) given great thanks (as well as support,
financially and otherwise -along with FFC.) to Akira while he was alive. Ironically, it
was he, Kurosawa who publicly acknowledged his "borrowing" from the Hollywood of the
1930's, 40's, and 50's for ideas and inspiration in producing his films dealing with
Japan's Feudal as well as contemporary society. I believe there is a fine line between
borrowing and stealing, blatantly or otherwise. (this isn't the Whitehouse silverware,
after all.) Artists great and small have, by necessity, often sought the fuel needed for
creation from sources other than their own minds.
Curiously, we rarely hear (if at all) anyone accuse Martin Scorcese for
stealing/borrowing/garnering his inspiration for Taxidriver from John Ford's The
Searchers, but, the lauded New York director nonetheless attributes this Western genre
film with providing the inspiration for his more contemporary tale of transformation of
the psyche. In fact, Scorcese is considered by many young filmmakers to be a truly unique
artist in cinema. So, it touches on something else here when we hear Mr. Scorcese himself
admitting to "only copying what has come before". He gives great credit to the pioneering
efforts of those who came before him. And he puts his money where his mouth is, as well,
spearheading efforts in the restoration of old films for the AFI.
For some reason I am reminded of the old adage about art and the need for comparison,
which goes something like, "the first art critic could exist, only after the second work
of art was created."
All the Best.

Message-ID: <02e201c09102$304eb300$8f8803c4@lairdmurphy>
Thank you all for the advice concerning importing Photoshop type images into
FCP complete with layer effects. Let me just clarify: I'm talking about
importing ONE layer here, the type layer with effects applied within the
layer(dropp shadow, bevel etc), which don't get carried through to FCP
without flattening (which creates Alpha channel problems).
There were no suggestions that worked unfortunately, probably due to the
different photoshop versions people were operating from. On my G4 I'm using
version 6 and that seems different from the PC version and earlier versions
as there is no "Render Layer" command under the Type submenu.
Still the responses forced me to try many things and I've found one that
worked.
Merging layers makes it work rather than flattening but my problem was that
there is no MERGE command with one layer. So simply adding another
(transparent) layer with nothing on it and merging solved the problem.
Thanks again for all your efforts

This is one of the most intriguing potential features
of the Matrox RT2000, Pinnacle DV500, or any editing
system based on the C-Cube chipset... that chipset
supports frame rates of 29.97, 25, and: 23.976! (as
in, 24 fps film telecine'd to NTSC video!)
If the manufacturers of the editing systems chose to
implement it, we could edit telecine'd film projects
frame-per-frame, just like on an $80,000 Avid Film
Composer (well, except with Premiere, of course!) No
need for matchback software, no 3:2 pulldown, no ghost
frames, no sync problems, pure frame-for-frame
editing.
So far, no manufacturer that I know of has chosen to
implement this capability, but in e-mails they have
confirmed that it is possible.

Well, I'm ex KH6CMN (license expired in 61 or 62)
A small point, but amateur UHF hand helds aren't the only ones out there. I
have half a dozen commercial band Icom UHF handhelds that probably couldn't
be distinguished from a ham rig without a closeup.

DV is a 4:1:1 format. Maybe the DV1000 claim has to do with the internal processing of the video during the mixing processes in your NLE. The Canopus board internal processing is done in
YUV which results in as little degradation of the picture as I have seen due to processing.
The Canopus DVStorm is the only board, I think, that offers realtime color correction which was my main consideration. If I'm wrong, I'm sure I'll be quickly corrected by others more
familiar with the other boards.

Not true. Not one Dogme movie has been made on Sony's 24p. In fact not
one movie has been made on 24p that has even been released (in US at least).
I've seen one, know of others, seen footage from this and that one, but a
feature? No. Unless I missed something in the post, THE CELEBRATION was
done on DV (Pal I believe, mini-DV at that), BREAKING THE WAVES was done on
film, but I'm not sure that's an "official" Dogme entry, DANCE IN THE DARK
was done on Digi-Beta and DV (DV for the fantasy sequences). 24p looks
dramatically different, much more like film in color and detail. I've seen
it vary in looks, largely from lenses, lighting and transfer (to 35mm film
and projected). Sometimes it looks a tiny bit soft (lenses? diffusion?
hard to tell) and at time - a Budweiser commercial to be specific - where on
one shot it looked AMAZINGLY sharp, even sharper that 35mm, more like 70mm.

I'd say the crap produced since the late 60's-early 70's proves you
wrong.
There's an interesting tangent!
And I'm not sure your exact point. But it seems to prove what I was
saying.
Compare that to the Stones and Beatles who listened to music from black
America, decades in the past.
Right, and compare it with the guys who studied at Julliard and studied
classical guitar and musical structure from Gregorian chants - it didn't
really help them. And you point the the Beatles and Stones - they just
listened to the records of their youth, and didn't go back further than
that. Chuck Berry and blues - which was popular back in the '50's.
Leiber and Stoller didn't listen to classical music, they listened to
blues -(1950 when they started) which when they were teenagers was pop hip
black music.
Few, if anyone, has so much talent they can make great art out of
nothing.
I agree, but it's an evolutionary thing.
An artist needs input.
Absolutely.
Without a deep understanding and
appreciation of the past -- even a talented person becomes nothing but a
commercial property.
I would disagree and say the recent past is much more important than the
distant past.
Frankly very little of value has been created in either music or
video/film for several decades. And I doubt it's lack of talent. It's
the total lack of education (read HISTORY) that has created the current
lack of art.
I think the movies have been hurt by the studio systems and the auteur
theory - studios believe that directors can make a mediocre script into a
good movie by tweaking everything (the look, the staging, the camera
movement, casting, scoring, etc) in the absence of a good story.
There have been artistic bursts - the early 70's was one - which largely a
reaction to the 60's.
Music? Clearly you must not like rap, but it's very influential, lots of
people are enjoying it and it's a kind of odd form of music which can be
constructred without knowing how to play an instrument or read music in
anyway. Actually a lot of "house" music is like that.
But the music of the '60's was a reaction to the blandness that rock n' roll
had become by the early '60's. Dylan studied folkies and not classical.

Yes, I think they were refering to the internal processing. But do you think
that 4:2:2 might pick up slightly better image quality from DV's 4:1:1? Even
though DV is 4:1:1, I was just wondering if the 4:2:2 might do a slightly

The DC1000 has very limited realtime color correction.
I would go for the DVStorm, especially if you're adding it into a
system that's already built, simply because it seems to have less
incompatibilities with other hardware. Pinnacle also provides the
worst support I have ever experienced for any product. Every single
piece of hardware in my computer was "compliant" with the Pinnacle
board, and yet my stystem crashed every single day. Output quality was
also very poor (random splotches of color, blocky areas).
However, to be fair, I should say that I have a friend who is running
the board perfectly, and had only a few minor problems when he first
set the card up. It varies wildly, but the Pinnacle setup can break
easily. And when it does break, it's really hard to fix without
changing hardware...
I used the RT2000 when it first came out, and the worst problem I can
think of was constant audio drift. I've heard that they've fixed a lot
of the problems since then, and that it's a pretty good board now. I
don't believe you get realtime color correction.
The advantage with the Canopus products is that whatever your computer
can handle, you can do. The Storm will probably not become obsolete.
The Matrix and Pinnacle boards, on the other hand, have very limited
upgrade capabilities. Having a faster computer isn't going to change
what it can do, whereas more processing speed for the Storm increases
its realtime capabilities. That by itself is a huge advantage, as well
as Canopus' reputation and reliability.
I suggest you look at the user forums for the respective boards (on the
company web sites) to see what sort of problems you might encounter.
Keep in mind, however, that the only people who post on these forums
are people who have problems, so it's definitely a skewed sample.
Pinnacle's DV500 forum, interestingly, had some pissed people
threatening with a class action lawsuit.

My guess would be an overlay conflict with the DC30 card and the video
display card.
First, make sure you are using the DV-NTSC preset when playing back the DV
clips. I'm assuming you are capturing with the MSDV codec and not a third
party codec.
Disable or remove your DC30 card. Will the clip play ok without the card
installed?
I think the DC30 is fighting for video resources, and controlling video
overlay.
Hope this helps.

From Deck to Mixer:
Channel 3 Out to Line In 5 (via F-XLR to 1/4" TRS)
Channel 4 Out to Line In 6 (via F-XLR to 1/4" TRS)
From Mixer to Deck
Aux Send 1 to Channel 3 In (via M-XLR to 1/4" TRS)
Aux Send 2 to Channel 4 In (via M-XLR to 1/4" trs)
From NLE to Mixer
Channel 3 Out to Line In 11 (via F-XLR to 1/4" TRS)
Channel 4 Out to Line In 12 (vis F-XLR to 1/4" TRS)
From Mixer to NLE
Alt Out L/3 to Channel 3 In (via M-XLR to 1/4" TRS)

Not working!!

I bought an XL-1 from 'em. Guess I got a pretty good deal, and they did what
they promised, eventually, but they strung me along for a month. If I had it
to do again, I'd probably pay a little more (or maybe not) and get it from

Subject: RE: ?DV1000 vs MatroxRT2000 vs DVStorm?
Message-ID:
Good advice from the others. Of course I recommend DVStorm, but I am a
Canopus Integrator so you'd expect me to say that. However, I've continued
to be open to integrating other products, and have no special incentive for
using Canopus. I continue to find that the DVStorm, as with other Canopus
products, offers superior price/performance with excellent stability and
support. I've put a comparison table up on my web site at
http://www.krysalisproductions.com/systems_comparisons.htm. It doesn't have
the Pinnacle DV1000, but it does have the DV500 and Matrox RT2000 listed.
Some of the features DVStorm gives you in real-time:
- Color correction (RGB or YUV, plus brightness/contrast
(chrominance/luminance))
- Picture-in-Picture
- many 2D transitions, such as wipes, pushes, ripples, and more
- many filter effects, such as old-movie, motion blur, blur, soft focus,
emboss, etc.
- sound filters, such as high-pass and low-pass audio filters
- parabolic and graphic equalizers
The board supports 16:9 and 4-channel audio. It comes with StormEdit, which
is an excellent and easy to use editor for basic editing that performs very
well and will do fine with long-form projects. You can always tag team it
with Premiere for doing the more advanced work. As mentioned, it is scalable
unlike the competition, so the more horsepower in your system, the more
real-time you will get. Plus you have real-time output to both DV and analog
at the same time, no rendering. And if you add the MPEG option card, then
you will also have real-time output to MPEG1 and MPEG2. As far as quality,
Canopus is widely regarded as having the highest quality DV codec. That's
one big reason Avid chose Canopus as its partner for DV-based editing.
I'm happy to answer more questions you have...

I just went through this same dilemma and decided on a
Vinten 3, a product newly designed especially for DV
units from the PD-150 to the DSR 300/500. They have
developed an interchangable spring design built into
the head so you get just the proper tension depending
on whather you are using something as light as a 150 or
as heavy as a 500...but one tripod will do for both,
which is nice.
The price tag is not cheap (probably comparable to
Sachtler) but I found a source that substantially
discounts the list prices, if you are interested.
Meanwhile, you can see details at:

BTW, aluminum legs are standard, carbon legs are about
$250 more and decrease weight by only about a pound.

I have used Interland before. I've developed several sites deployed to their
NT plan with MS SQL server. I have grievances with them, which mainly have
to due with the fact that their shared NT+SQL hosting plans seemed to have
problems with ASP. The site would break periodically or go through a
terrible slow down, and the default session time was only five minutes. I
traced all these down to their root source, which were several non-default
settings they had tweaked to lessen the load on their servers. These
settings work okay for many sites, but the very dynamic sites I'd developed
needed more.
To their credit, though, they have an excellent support system. Not only is
their web-based interface for managing the site excellent, but their
telephone support people are very knowledgeable on the whole, especially
once they escalate you (which they must always do for me since I wouldn't be
calling unless it was a hairy issue). Also, on these settings that were a
problem, they had no problem immediately changing these settings to
accommodate me.
I would probably use them again, but that is mostly because I've never found
an ISP I was 100% satisfied with, and so I would rather go with the
known-evils of Interland since I now am aware of what tweaks need to be made
to iron out kinks in their service. Once those things are done, it seems to
work well.
My own site is currently hosted at NetHollywood.net. I used to think they
were a great value, but they have undergone numerous hacker attacks because
they host a site for a woman who writes anti-hacker books. My site and email
has gone down frequently of late, so at this point I am looking for a new
ISP (actually I'm probably going to co-locate dedicated servers now). So
don't get them.

Hey all,
We are shopping around for a new web hosting company. As a growing
developer, we can no longer tolerate the local providers, and we need
something better than "Billy Bob's Web Company and Rib Shack".
We've read the ads, visited the sites, checked the "Top 25" lists, and our
in-box is full of sales proposals.
Although we can evaluate the services/prices/merits of each company, we
cannot predict their actions. We are looking to hear about your experiences
with these companies.
We want your horror stories. Who to avoid and why. Nightmares of 3-hour hold
times, lost ODBC/DSN settings, permissions gone berserk, mail servers that
choke every 72 hours.
I am considering Interland.com, Intermedia.net, Webhosting.com,
Affinity.com, and HostPro.com to name a few. Any specific experience with
these big guns would be very helpful.

I'll base this description on what we have, most of which was set up by the
official Avid installer. If you have a different system some of the minor
details may be different....
From deck to mixer In on channels 1/2 via 1/4"
This signal is sent to the NLE by pressing the Mute/alt 3-4 button above the
fader, and running cable from alt output jacks on the back of the mixer
(1/4' to xlr) to NLE inputs 1 and 2.
From mixer to deck:
Run xlr-to-xlr out the Mackie's Main Outs to deck inputs
From NLE to mixer
Avid analog outs 1 & 2 to mixer inputs 3 & 4. Mackie inputs 11 & 12 are
designed to blend to incoming signals which are controlled by a single
fader. I use 1 & 2 for our beta deck and 3 & 4 for the Avid because they're
the two primary devices. Our DVCAM deck is routed to 5 & 6.
You have the Alt outs routed correctly from the back of the mixer to the
NLE. I'm guessing you don't have the source signal buttons pressed to alt
3/4 when you're trying to feed sound to the NLE. Also remember not to have
any of the solo buttons pressed/lit up when you're doing any signal routing.
I NEVER use the solo buttons with my NLE.
Remember that any input can be routed to the Main Outs by leaving the
Mute/3-4 alt button up, and to the alt outputs by depressing this button.
Also: the C-R/Source buttons above the CTL Room/SUBMIX fader control what's
being sent to the speaker outs for audible monitoring. They can be used in
multiple, but it's usually confusing to do that. "Main" lets you hear
what's going to the Main Outs; ALT 3-4 lets you hear what's going to the Alt
Outs, and TAPE lets you hear what's *coming in* the Tape Input (Tape Out
gets the same output as Main Mix). "Assign to Main Mix" makes any active
signals coming in through Main, ALT, or TAPE route through to the Main Outs.
This will also feed any "Soloed" channels to the Main Mix. This is one
reason you don't want to use the Solo buttons much if at all. (They are
normally used for short term monitoring of a specific signal.)
--------------------------------------------------

Don't want to get bogged down in a P4 debate, I'm not a huge fan of them
.....yet.
But from Canopus own website:
http://www.canopuscorp.com/products/stormcpu.php3
The P4 holds its own against a dual 700. The only spot that it had lower
performance was real-time chromakey. PC makers are getting clobbered. They
need sales volume. Cost for P4 systems is falling. The gap is closing.

I agree mostly with Dave's response, although I think I can distill it a
little bit more down to its essence. Here's some points of comparison:
1. Yes, dual Pentium III systems (dual 1GHz) is currently the fastest,
providing you are using multi-threaded applications and environment (Windows
NT or 2000).
2. Overall, the single fastest processor available is the AMD Athlon 1.2GHz
(1.3GHz will be here very soon). It will beat a PIII 1GHz in every benchmark
and costs about the same.
3. The Pentium 4 at 1.5GHz is only able to beat the Athlon at 1.2GHz in a
few specific benchmarks, namely media-encoding and *some* 3D games such as
Quake III. The latter point is specific, though, as the Athlon will win in
most 3D games still, including other shooters like Unreal Tournament.
However, either system will be plenty for any game. What it really comes
down to at the high-end is workstation and server performance. While an edge
in media-encoding may be valuable to some, the huge advantage the Athlon
enjoys in floating-point operations makes it the hands-down pick for
professional 3D modelers and animators. Factor in the much lower cost and
the choice becomes even easier.
4. DDR SDRAM - The Pentium III will take very little advantage of DDR
memory, just as it did with RDRAM. See
http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1402 to back this up. As long as DDR
is more than a little extra expensive compared to SDRAM, it doesn't make
sense to couple it with a Pentium III system. To a lesser degree, this is
also true with Athlon. However, Athlon is a little bit more memory hungry
than the PIII due to it's 200MHz or 266MHz effective bus speed, so it will
get some benefit. Of course, DDR will likely fall to very near the price of
SDRAM in the next few weeks, and then it will be justified.
5. EV6 Bus - A very simple way of explaining the benefits of the EV6's
point-to-point bus for multiprocessing, which Dave went deeply into, is
this: Pentium III and other current SMP implementations share the front-side
bus bandwidth among all processors. For example, a dual-Pentium III system
with a 133MHz bus can only allocate 66MHz to each processor if both are at
100% utilization; they are sharing. With the EV6 bus, each processor gets
the full pipe. So a dual-Athlon system with a 266Mhz bus gives a full 266MHz
to both processors simultaneously. This is when DDR will really come into
its own, with dual Athlons, since they will be able to feed memory a lot
faster.

Hi Dave
Long post, very informative, but a little difficult to digest with limited
sleep. Please tell my brain in plain terms what is the right
processor/motherboard to buy for a storm system:
1. Athlon?
2. PIII(fastest Mhz available) in single CPU
3. dual PIII(?)
4. PIV?

What you say is logical, but I don't agree. There are some people working
today or recently in various media whose work I am utterly convinced has
timeless merit and will last. That doesn't mean that interest in that
person's work won't wax and wane within limits, and of course I may be flat
wrong in individual cases. There are others perhaps whose general star may
fall and never rise again, but I think the value of the best work is as
plain now as it will be tomorrow. The point, in part, is that the "judging"
to which you refer happens over and over again. Work is never "judged" once
and for all. Everything's refracted through the crystals of the present.
Indeed the best work is also often the work that's evaluated most often
because it continues to engage people actively...
What you say is true for some artists and artifacts, but personally I don't
agree that it's true "in general."

In general one cannot judge the lasting nature of any work of art
(visual or audio) during the lifetime of the artist or the
lifetime of folks who were alive while the artist
created/released his work. It take several generation beyond the
artist's lifetime to truly judge the endurance of the work.

hi Dick, make sure you have a normal size heatsink/fan... larger ones (such
as the thermaltake Super Orb i use) won't fit on the kt7 or kt7a... I'm
using the a7v133 (Asus's board with the same kt133a chipset) which has much
more clearance for hsf units...
both are great boards!

What is this obsession with what dissolves are supposed to do? As most "who" would agree. I certainly don't. I also not the Tyler and Robert should avoid my new short movie which uses dissolves within the same scenes to excess...
Plus, you're dumping on one of the great scenes in the movie - sets up the whole story, mood, characters, tone - and you guys are hung up the logical use of a dissolve.
Well, what we really need is a long, meandering thread about how long a time gap must occur before a dissolve can be used. Hell, let's get it programmed into NLE's - that way, no one will use dissolves incorrectly. What - 2 minutes, 15 minutes, 3 hours, 1 day?
Okay, so I'm waxing sarcastic and flippant, but I'm always amazed at stuff people get hung about it. It seems DV-L has more of it's share of armchair art critics.

Isn't that like saying that we can't judge the worth of political leaders
until after several generations?
Even after a few centuries, you won't know, because you could have a
subsequent revival of interest. But of course you are right if you are
suggesting that saying that a work is worthy of lasting and saying that a
work actually will last are two different things.

Okay - my turn:
* All guns sound like 45's - even bb guns
* All "computer experts" look like total geeks and live in one bedroom
apartments with a huge picture of Albert
Einstein . Obviously, they are paid much less than everyone else in the
movie - because everyone else lives
in wonderful homes in the suburbs. Of course, no computer geek with the
ability to crack any code in
existence could possibly get a well paying job - there's just too much
competition.
* ANYONE who carries and/or quotes from a bible is automatically either a
homicidal maniac, a con-artist, or a
cult leader intent on bringin on the end of the world.
* If the hero's a fifty year old man, he can still run two miles, leap from
tall buildings, and beat up fifty criminals
without taxing his pacemaker or getting out of breath. (Harrison -
Arnold)
* All young, gorgeous women really want Michael Douglas
* If you fly through a plate-glass window - you won't get a scratch on you.
* If you get shot - you can always just go to the hospital and they will
patch you up with a big piece of gauze and
let you go with no questions asked. Of course, when you get up from the
hospital bed, be sure to pick up your
gun, which they graciously allowed you to bring in with you.
* Aliens are neither green, nor do they look anything like men. Every alien
since "War of the Worlds" looks
something like a giant cockroach, or other disgusting bug.
* Any explosion will throw the good guy/girl out and away from the center .
Of course, even though the blast was powerful enough to send them flying 20
feet, it didn't cause a single scratch or singed hair.
* All Samoans are six foot five and built like "The Rock". They also never
speak.
And my personal favorite - heros NEVER run out of beer.......even if it's
the only thing in their refrigerator. Of course, all those hot dogs and beer
is what keeps them in such excellent physical shape ......

I recently got a Gitzo, the same package you're
looking at but with the 1380/10 head, the one that
goes from 15 to 22 pounds.
It's great--much better than I had expected. I bought
it for use with a DSR250. Movement is nice and smooth,
ball leveling works great, and best of all, it weighs
a fraction of what my old O'Connor 50 does. Although I
got it for the 250, I've also been using it with a
DSR500 because it's so easy to carry around. Love
those carbon fiber legs.
You're right, no spreader, and that's nice actually.
But, as you say, you can't hang a sandbag. I haven't
needed to. Anything that needs to be that solid, I use
the O'Connor. The rubber pads screw down to let the
spikes out, just like on the Gitzo still camera
tripods, so you can dig it into the ground easy when
outdoors. I used it for 2 weeks in about 10 locations,
interior and exterior, and never had any movement
problems.
One neat thing about the Gitzo is the handle that
sticks down from under the ball leveler. Instead of a
knob, it's a handle about 6" long...makes it really
easy to pick up the tripod and camera with one hand.
Before I got the Gitzo, I had borrowed one of the
lightweight Sachtlers to use on a shoot with the 250.
I know it's probably considered sacreligeous to say
this, but I like the Gitzo a lot better than the
equivalent Sachtler, both in ease of use and in the
way the movement feels.
I also like the price--got it from B&H for around
$1500 or so. And, it comes with a padded bag. The bag
has a handle and a shoulder strap, and they also give
you a second shoulder strap that you can use to carry
the tripod without the bag...clever those French. I
like this Gitzo so well that the old O'Connor 50 is
pretty much living in the studio now, relegated to
teleprompter shoots.

I'm using the Gitzo, and have to say that I am fairly happy with it. I don't
know that it will be great for both the DSR 150 and the DSR 500 because they
are so different in weight. There are several Gitzo heads with various
counterspring settings. Like you, I will probably add a DSR150 to my DSR500
package that I bought the Gitzo for. I think it will still be useful, even
if mismatched on weight. The only thing where the exact match on
counterspring tension for the camera's weight would be critical would be a
situation where you needed to lock off the camera, especially over long
periods of time. In that case, the Gitzo counterspring will tend to pull the
shot off where you set it.
I've got an old Bogen Mini Fluid Head that should work great with the
DSR-150, which I use on top of my Gitzo Studex still camera legs. I wouldn't
plan to routinely use the DSR-150 and the DSR-500 on the same Gitzo support
- you can get lighter/smaller for the DSR-150.
If you go with Gitzo, I would make sure that you buy from a dealer where you
can exchange the head if it doesn't work out. I bought mine off the floor at
NAB. I wouldn't do this again, because I had just bought the camera, lens,
batteries, and Chrosiel matte box. The weight match is critical to the head.
This was the year Sony stopped handing out hardcopy on their literature, so
I didn't have actual specs on the DSR500. Didn't take delivery of camera and
lens until weeks later. I should have waited for delivery on all the
components, then done a real-world weigh-in on my rig. As it is, my system
works, but the balance adjustments on the plate seem extreme, and I feel
like I could have specified a better match on the specific Gitzo head model.
These same weight factors also played into my decision to standardize on one
size and one brand of battery. I can't be slowed in production by resetting
balance on the tripod head or jib arm with every battery change.
> Are the carbon fiber sticks too light? since there's no spreader, there's
> no place to add a sandbag if you needed to....
There's not a spreader on most carbon fiber Sachtlers or Vintens either. It
shouldn't be a problem to hang a shot bag off an s-hook from the top of the
tripod, this is what I do when I use the Gitzo legs riding on top of my
Microdolly (Microdolly uses a cord tensioner, not weight).
The thing about carbon fiber is it works great so long as you don't load it
past its rated capacity. If you do, the leg collets will slip. Carbon fiber
is great for most things, very lightweight, and won't stick to your skin in
cold weather. But don't load them past their rated capacity.
I bought a Microdolly Jib-Arm, and the Gitzo legs would not work for this
because of all the counter balance weights - the rig can easily get upwards
of 100 lbs. I wound up buying the Microdolly legs, but still mount the Gitzo
head to the boom arm.

That's a good question. So here's a way to find out. Watch AMC and TCM

Mozart complains about Baroque style music because it's for people who
"sh*t marble."
I'D AGREE WITH HIM.
As a young-un, I don't get a lot of exposure to the trash artists from
the 50-70's who were wildly popular, but didn't last. I'm sure,
though, there are slews of them...
NOT as many as you might think in the 50s. Recording was expensive. As
soon as it became cheap any kid could make a recording. Plus, the worst
of the 49' - 60's music is better than today's best music. (Actually --

Hi,
That is a sticky one...you would either need more Aux Sends or
a Patchbay...
But, If your tight....connect the Beta Outputs
direct to the NLE....? Depending on the deck there should be a
monitor control for the output or... line level input on the NLE ....
Do your edits....when Mastering....Pass the NLE Outputs to the
Mackie for Levels and Eq's directly to Betacam Inputs.....?
You may have to use the "Tape Out" and "Alt out's" to get 4 outs
since you will need your Master out to the Amp.
I have a feeling you will need to do seperate passes for 4-Channels
of Audio.....Sub down to 2(Stereo)
The 1402-VlZ Pro is a great mixer...but not for what you have...
not enough I/O's
But, I'm Sure if you Patch all Outputs to Mixer, both Deck and NLE,
you can always physically patch the Sends of each unit manually?
Hope this Helps

Yea...Ray Charles, Elvis, Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones...there were slews of those trash artists who didn't last. Grab a CD of the Monterey Pop Festival and listen to the noise all those
trash artists blamed on the horrible sound system. Still can't believe Hendrix was able to sound decent through that sorry excuse for a PA. Of course, Pearl sounded like God sent her down
from heaven to show us all just how blue a white girl from Texas could be singing with a two bit garage band through a junk PA....real garbage.
All I know is I went in to Easy Rider a high school red neck with an attitude you'd expect in a little Texas town and I came out a hippie peace freak with a smile on my face. It really did
change my life and I suspect the sound track had more to do with it than the Harleys.

Message-ID: <5.0.2.1.2.20010207201057.00ae6280@mail.adamation.com>
Adamation (www.adamation.com) is pleased to announce the first public beta
preview of a brand new, real-time, digital video NLE for Windows. After
having existed on the high-performance Be Operating System for more than
two years, Adamation is preparing to release personalStudio 2.0 for
Windows, and we're looking for beta testers to help us iron out any
remaining bugs.
Scheduled to sell for $49, personalStudio's advantages include:
- Real-time previews. All changes to transitional effects, rotation,
scaling, transparency, audio, text, or anything else can be seen
immediately. No dedicated hardware, and no rendering until your project is
complete.
- Extreme ease of use. Many consumer-level NLEs are more difficult to learn
and use than they need to be. personalStudio emphasizes an intuitive
workflow and simple learning curve, yet manages to include enough
functionality to satisfy more demanding users as well.
- Ten layers. While most NLEs in the sub-$100 category let you work with
one layer of video, one layer of text, and two layers of audio, each of
personalStudio's 10 layers can contain any combination of video, audio,
text, or alpha masks.
Visit http://www.adamation.com/pSbeta/ and sign up to become a beta tester.
All beta testers who respond with comments or bug reports will be entitled
to keep a registered electronic copy of the final Golden Master prior to CD
duplication.
Beta testers must have at least a PII 350 with 64MBs of memory, a digital
video camera with IEEE-1394 port, and Windows-compatible IEEE-1394 card.
personalStudio runs on Windows 98SE, Windows ME, and Windows 2000.
personalStudio does not run on Windows 95, Windows 98 First Edition, or
Windows NT.

I recently bought a Sony VX-2000. I asked 4 companies in the Los Angeles
area for a quote. Only heard from Samy's Camera....they sent me a number to
call. I called and got a price. They next day I went to look at the
VX-2000 and I thought to buy it. After a demo, the salesman quoted me
$100.00 more than I had been quoted on the phone less than a day before.
When I asked why he got his back up. I left. Next moring I called B&H and
got it for $2500 which was a savings of $200.00 the sales tax savings was
another $200.00 savings. Over night shipping was $64.00 and I had it in Los
Angeles by 10:00AM the next day. Before I got off the phone they told me it
was in stock, that the credit card had been approved, and gave me an order
number. I have made 3 major equipment purchases from them in the last year
with the same level of service.
I am a very satisfied B&H customer.

A Good choice is a Pyro Basic DV. eCost.com has them at around $ 50.
You will have to render everything, but that's not a big. Premiere 6 is very
fast
and native DV is easy to set up.
You may want to check out my plug-in The Consolidator to consolidate
rendering
and streamline the production process. You can try it for free for 30 days.

Could someone explain to an uninitiated one the difference between using
an rt2000 vs a generic dv capture card when capturing and editing with
Premiere 6?
I just got Prem6 and would like to now get a dv capture board. I know that
rt2000 does some realtime effects, whereas with a low cost dv board , you
must render everything. If I want to get my feet wet with a 100 to 200
dollar dv card, what kinds of problems/ frustrations am I going to run into?
What would be a good recommendation for a low cost dv board?
Thanks for your help

a large "fan" is fine, but a large heatsink that extends outside the area of
the socket will be a problem... you can see how close the capacitors are to
the socket so hsf units like the thermaltake super orb cannot be used
without stripping the capacitors...

Putting two firewire cards in a system may give you some headaches, but
everyone's mileage varies. Some have done okay. I'm attempting this by
putting an OHCI card with DVStorm in the same system later this month.
Why would you prefer a Firewire drive? It seems like a lot of people want
these but there's no real reason that they know of that makes it better than
IDE, they just like that it uses Firewire. You should really make sure this
is the best solution before you decide no to get a traditional internal IDE
device. Of course maybe you know your reasons already...

Subject: Additional Storage
I would like to add more storage capacity to my computer. Presently I have
two (27 Gig) hard drives. I am thinking to add an 80 gig firewire external
harddrive which can be had for about $390. It will, of course require I add
another PCI firewire card as my understanding is that my exisiting Digital
Origin card, while having 3 ports, will only support one device at a time
and would not be compatable with a storage device anyway.
The drive I am considering is a Maxtor and its rotational speed is 5400
rpms. As I wish to dedicate this drive for video editing, I would like to
know if it will perform acceptably. And also, should I be concerned with
compatability with the firewire card or will any card do?
Suggestions, caveats and opinions will be most welcomed.
Thanks....
Vinny

Are you "right"? Well, it'll give you excellent performance for the buck. It
will perform similar to Dual Pentium III 650s with DVStorm and its
associated applications. You will definitely get a fair amount of real-time
performance out of it, or else I wouldn't have Athlons as an option in my
turnkey systems. However, don't expect it to beat dual Pentium III 1GHz in
all-out performance. It is a good value, a good performer, but not the
fastest available.
Try either an Abit KT7A or Asus A7V133A.

For the record, I don't agree that everyone should basically throw dissolves
out the window. I think every transition has its place, and a good artists
uses all his tools and knows when to use them.
We're (or at least I) not rejecting the use of the dissolve in that scene,
just the way its used. It's meant to suggest the passage of time, but the
conversation continues to carry through it, which makes it inconsistent. It
sticks out in your head. All they needed to do was fade the audio track into
a later point in the conversation along with the dissolve and it would have
reinforced the intended effect. But you're right, other than this issue the
scene is a very good one and pivotal to the movie.
Of course there are plenty of armchair critics here! What would you expect?

What is this obsession with what dissolves are supposed to do? As most "who"

my new short movie which uses dissolves within the same scenes to excess...
Plus, you're dumping on one of the great scenes in the movie - sets up the
whole story, mood, characters, tone - and you guys are hung up the logical
use of a dissolve.

Anyone know what band grossed the most money in the year 2000? THE BEATLES!
So Rich, it goes to show how subjective our experience of culture is. I hear

Aphex Twin (basically one dude Richard D James)
Guided By Voices (basically one dude Richard Pollard)
Big Black/Shellac (basically Steve Albini bands)
The Fall (bascially one dude Mark E. Smith- only the Rolling Stones edge 'em
out of being the world's best R&R band)
are some pretty good "hey I can record my own crap cheap" artists.
Check 'em out.
GBV are crayzy prolific, 20-30 songs per album, tons of albums, a surprising
amount of which is really really good. Top pop.
Aphex Twin is just all over the place with that ambient techno stuff, but I
think it's really rather good as well Varied.
The Fall have like 30 records. Not all great, but when they're on, ouch, the
some of the best. Cynical as all hell.
Steve Albini hates CD and presses some really nice thick vinyl LPs. Rock.
The radio and MTV have just forced the good stuff to stay down low-fi.
