Could you post again if you indicated a site where I can
find comparison tests for wide angle adapters for a Sony PD 150 camera

I've asked this on some Mac Lists with no replies!

I want to add a second video card to my G4 to expand the worktop. Since it
will only be used for artwork, I don't need any fancy 3D acceleration.

An existing cheap (now obsolete) Formac PCI card works fine on my 9600 but
stops the G4 from booting. I've temporarily stolen the 9600 OEM card but the
driver for that won't update properly in the G4.

I've just looked through the Ads in a couple of UK Mac magazines, and there
isn't a single PCI video card to be seen.

How can I get a second monitor on my G4?

Absolutely. It is compressed in the camera, using the DV codec. During
editing - if your editor is at least half smart - the material will not be
recompressed. Unless you apply filters or effects to it. Then the parts
with the filter or effects will be recompressed.

It looks like the long awaited IEEE 1394b, a.k.a. the "new & improved 1394"
is nearing completion and is expected to be voted on soon and bestowed
formal IEEE standard status. If you don't mind reading through 386 pages of
dense prose, then the p1394b Draft 1.11 is awaiting you at:
http://www.zayante.com/p1394b/drafts/p1394b1-11.pdf

Executive summary:

"Work on this standard was begun in the winter of 1997 at a meeting of the
1394TA in Eindhoven. By that time, it had become evident that (IEEE 1394)
was going to be widely deployed and that many devices, especially new,
digital consumer products, were going to have 1394 as the primary external
interface. .... While attempting to broaden the scope of 1394, two barriers
were dis-
covered that made wider deployment of 1394 difficult: the interface was
constrained to operate over a fairly short distance and it could not handle
higher data rates."

It was concluded that these problems were best solved by a change in
coding, and the new coding scheme was applied to a large variety of
interconnect media including plastic optical fiber, glass optical fiber and
UTP5.

Happy reading!

Hi list,

Please let me get this information straight concerning the Matrox RTMac card:

It will output its realtime effects through Firewire. (Whoever would pay
a thousand bucks just for previews?)

The realtime effects will include dissolves and all parameters in the
Motion tab, except Motion blur.

It has analog inputs AND outputs.

It will NOT do realtime color och level correction.

Or is there anything here that I've misunderstood?

Cheers

Perry,

I pulled a PCI card (don't recall the brand) from my old G3 and it has worked
fine with no boot problems or anything. If I recall correctly, I bought the
card from MacWarehouse a couple of years ago. You might check their site:

FCP will do the job as well as Avid, FCP 2.0 has many new features and most people who have used both think FCP is superior to Avid for the price. There are also other SDI cards out there
for Mac, the best and lest expensive so far is the D1 Desktop by Digital Voodoo. This card is one card as opposed to Avids expansion Chasis and many cards, also has AES/EBU audio on board
and only SDI i/o. there are many analog to SDI converters for any analog formate you need. Also 2.snter has SDI in but I don't like their drivers, just a little flacky.

Hello: I use a scheider lens for wide angle. I was given two and although
they are expensive the distortion on this lens as with compared others on
the extreme wide angle. Many times when I am set up for two speakers with
two mics one in front of each all of a sudden someone comes up and I do not
have a mic or the right lens. This is where my lens comes into play. For =
a
mic I always have a PZM mic with me and that is already their and then I
plug that into my camera if I have the time. I also usually have my second
camera all set up with this lens also and mic if at all possible near by.
This second camera naturally can give me extra work when editing yet that
is what I have found works for me. Also in close quarters this lens is
necessary. I believe that the lens and sound are first and then the camera=
.
For all together in harmony is what makes life and promises easier to keep.
Also when I tested the canon XL-1 camera as compared to others in the price
range, I first looked at the interchangeable lens along witht he sound.
Many people tried to convince me to purchase Sony yet the lens although
excellent was not removable in this price range. Other features were their
and I had to deceide what was important to me and what I was going to use
the camera for in what type of weather conditions. Before I come to Paris
on my next trip I will contact you so you and I can exchange experiences.

No, it will not, only analog real time output. You pay for the speed of
workflow. Rendering for output to DV can be done during coffee, bathroom,
dinner, sleep, shopping, ... you name it.

Right.

Right. I'm not sure whether it will give real time preview of color
correction, didn't get a straight answer to that question yet.

Got a Dell 4100 Home desktop system 6 weeks ago... ordered a Firewire =

Straight out of the box, couldn't get any capture at all. The software =
is MGI Videowave III, and it's a Firewave 1394 card. Multiple calls to =
tech support resulted in two house calls (one to replace card, a second =
to replace motherboard!) all to no avail. Still no capture! Finally got =
pissed off with Dell, sent back the card, got my $100 back. Went to Best =
Buy, bought Dazzle DV-Editor, installed it (by coincidence, same =
Firewave card) and still does not work. The computer just does not seem =
to recognize a device installed. There are no 1394 drivers on my =
Resource/Driver CD that came with the computer to re-install, but the =
driver seems to install itself when I "Add New Hardware" straight off =
the hard drive.
Some specifics:
Control Panel > System > Device Manager: Texas Instruments OHCI =

Control Panel > Sounds & Multimedia > Video Capture Devices ' There are =
no devices of this class installed'

Isn't this a conflict?

Using both MGI Videowave III and Dazzle DV-Editor, the software keeps =
saying 'No capture driver available in system' or 'Unable to open =

Depends on the image you're scanning. I generally stick to around 3-600 for
4x6s... Tiny stuff... you may have to go really high with.

> You really can't compare scans of prints to scans of negatives, given a

This would be the point. If you can scan the film do so. You can change
the brightness across the scan for real... with a flatbed and prints you're
limited to what gets reflected. {Sometimes not very much.} As far as
resolution goes... you can probably go to 2700-3000 with 35mm. {Before it
becomes pointless... you may have a reason to scan higher though... Kodak
advertises a "64 base" 6144x4096 pixel scan tho' I think this is probably
for large format film. I think 35mm is pretty much limited to 2048x3072
pixel "16 base." {as per a digital camera faq I read some time back}}

http://www.library.cornell.edu/preservation/kodak/kodak-htm.htm

You can probably get a little higher... like around... 300 with sharp, good
quality prints... get out the old large format Hassleblad black and white
8x10s and you may be able to go to 400. {'Course that does depend on the
paper.}

I scan at 600+ anyway {depending on what I'll be outputting to} seeing as
it seems that scaling the scan does more damage than scanning at high
resolutions. If you're scanning something the size of a postage stamp and
want to print something 8x10 {for whatever reason} I think you'll get better
results scanning high {like to 8x10x266 like it's probably going to get
printed {if you're using Photoshop, anyway}} rather than scaling.

If it's for the screen... I don't think you need to scan all that high at
all. I generally just look at the size I'll be wanting and try to avoid
scaling stuff. {Tho' sometimes if you've got a really noisy image...
scanning high and scaling can smooth it better than filters or
antialiasing.}

Dell and Gateway have put millions of dollars into marketing their

She called their tech support to ask how she might upgrade it to do desktop

I have not used those firewire cards, but in order to capture video in most
programs, a firewire controller is all that is usually required. Some
capture card show up under "Video Capture Devices" but some do not if they
are just a plain 1394 device.

One of the first things I tried with my new ThinkPad and PC100 was an
export back to the camera. Premiere 6.0 worked perfectly for me first
time, second time, etc....

Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe this poster has a unique set of

It's true to an extent.

First, not all users experience the problem. Second, one of the problems
can be 'solved' by installing a massive amount of ram - like over 380M.
Less than that and P6 starts banging into the swap file causing useless
playback.

To Adobe's credit, after seeing me post about the problem a few times THEY
called ME to attempt to help solve the problem. Unfortunately by then I had
disassembled that machine and I haven't really had a chance to test the
problem in the new one (with 512M ram).

You may have to choose a capture device in your 'capturing software'

set up and then to device control and select from the list. Hope this helps,

Sheila,
Thanks for the tips...although I am still in the dark as far as what to do
with
Windows CD... what do I actually do with it? Instructions are vague... they
said I
would be prompted to insert Windows CD and follow the wizard instructions,
but no
such prompt occurred and it just seemed to automatically install the driver
off the hard

text saying
'You will need to have your Windows CD ready to complete installation.'
Great help, huh?
Oh, that 'list' you talked about... what does it list exactly, specific
camera models and brands
or generic items like still camera or DV camera? I can't find any list like
that in either software package.
Thanks for the help.

I have the problem and I am running 384 MB RAM...
The problem shows as a rapid stutter for about a second at any location
while exporting the timeline to DV tape via the firewire.
Gee, I'm glad you posted this thread here as I was wondering where the
problem was coming from.

I wonder if more RAM would fix this???

It's true to an extent.

First, not all users experience the problem. Second, one of the problems
can be 'solved' by installing a massive amount of ram - like over 380M.
Less than that and P6 starts banging into the swap file causing useless
playback.

To Adobe's credit, after seeing me post about the problem a few times THEY
called ME to attempt to help solve the problem. Unfortunately by then I had
disassembled that machine and I haven't really had a chance to test the
problem in the new one (with 512M ram).

)))))))))))

Yup, I know about it, but I'm not too sure about
what it can do other than uncompressed quicktime.
What that means (if true) is that you can ONLY sample at the
uncompressed rate, which will require a raid array that is
able to sustain that rate of 270mbps. You'll also
need lots of gigs. I know Digital Voodoo just added audio
sampling too, but I'm not familiar with how it all integrates
with FPC. I will make it a point to check on this at NAB.
With clients fretting deadlines, you want a solution
that can bring it all home asap.

Though uncompressed is great, it can be a pain to deal with when
you have many hours of footage that need to be sampled and sorted through.
We never heard what it is that the original poster wanted to
accomplish, but it can be nice to have the ability to work in
lower resolution_s_, especially when different clients are
coming and going all the time and you need storage space
to hold their different projects.

Almost no one can tell the difference
between 2:1 and 1:1, and if you can, I bet you're stopped on
a frame and going over it with a fine tooth comb.
I don't count that, and heavens knows, DV won't stand up
to that test when compared to 2:1 digital betacam. Much of
the time, uncompressed is a waist of storage space, when
using 2:1 compression could have doubled it.

>This card is one card as opposed to Avids expansion Chasis and many cards,

I don't know if you've heard, but Avid's (almost new, 2 yrs old now) own
Merdien card is one slot for audio and video with a break out box.
The reasons for expansion chassis was the AVBD board set and is for those
who require many extra slots for other stuff. Running an Avid
takes only 1 slot now, and software is in version 10.

More RAM won't fix it. I suspect motherboard problems. The same crap
I've been going through. I guess the recent discussions about this problem
has been forgotten already.

Try changing your PCI latency in the BIOS, to something like 128. If you
can't change it and it is at 32, odds are you are in trouble. An Abit
KA7-100 board that I have cannot be set and it is at 32 and dropped frames,
both in and out, is part of the deal with this board. So, I can't use it
with any DV firewire card. The Abit BP6 board that I have can't be set
either, but its PCI latency is where I need it, which is why it probably
works.

Firewire and PCI motherboards is a hit-n-miss situation, at least from what
I have discovered.

My ThinkPad is PIII800 with only 128 MB RAM. My FW Card is the IBM with TI chips. I export from an external IBM 75GB drive in a Pyro case. All is well here but this kind of thing does
make one nervous...please keep us informed.

This is total kerflooey. If Premiere wouldn't work on "any OHCI compliant
device, with any hardware configuration," this list would be up in flames
about it. If there's a problem, then it's with the original poster. He
might need to increase his medication. Or trade-in his 486 with 16 Megs of
RAM for something more contemporary ....

These days, 380 Megs is not considered "massive." "Generous," maybe.
Folks, video editing is now possible with a $29 1394 card from Best Buy and
some ridiculously cheap IDE drives. According to Pricewatch, 512 Megs of
PC133 RAM can be bought for less than $100, spend another $100 and you buy
quality RAM like Micron, Corsair or Kingston. This is bubkes compared to
what we paid for a DC30 with horrid quality, if it ever worked.

At these prices, I wouldn't complain even if my machine needed a full Gig
of RAM to output stutter-free video.

It is likely that you have your project set to replay on the DV camera,
either unplug the camera and reboot or go into the project settings and
tell it not to play back on the DV.

Most users are working in Premiere 6.0 on windows with OHCI DV cards without
problems. However, we aware that some users are experiencing stuttering and
speedup problems when exporting back to tape.
This is our highest priority issue and our working towards a solution.

Some users are reporting that the speedup issue can be solved by searching
for MSDV.sys file on the computer. Users with this issue have reported that
the older version of the driver exists System32/drivers folder vs. a newer
version that exists in the migrate folder. Copy the newer version into the
system32/drivers folder.

Subject: Re: Scanners for 35mm slides
Message-ID:

My understanding of the DigitalICE on previous models was that it
broadened the light source used for scanning and thus diffused the defects,
but I think the software side of the process has become more complex and
important. Maybe physical part has changed, too.
There's a review of the new Super Coolscan 4000ED at
http://steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/nikon_coolscan4000.html
He has two good examples of what DigitalICE is capable of. And the new
Nikon's have DigitalGEM (which supposedly greatly reduces previous Nikon
scanners' tendency to over-emphasize grain) and DigitalROC (to give better
color in the original scan) -- all this extra software slows scanning quite
a bit, but should really save time over correcting by hand in
Photoshop/???. I believe the same software is included on the
SuperCoolScan IV at a more affordable price -- the 4000dpi 4000ED is great
if you need sharp prints bigger than 8x12" at 300dpi (a 25MB file already
possible with the 2800dpi-ish film scanners).
Speaking from newsaper/freelance experience, if you scan negatives more
than occaisionally, get the newer Nikons with the better software or the
highly-regarded Minolta (something) Scan Elite with Digital ICE and no
tendency to over-emphasize grain, either. Actually, I'd avoid the older
Nikons for slides, too. Our SuperCoolScan 1000 works great much of the time
for slides, but other times it can be very frustrating and produce unusable
scans.
*** Steve's Web site for digital still cams, by the way, is simply
excellent. He's always got lots of news and the latest reviews, links to
other's info and reviews, and very, very thorough reviews with screenshots
of controls, menus, etc. and a nice group of sample images at full
resolution to download taken straight from the camera's card. It'd be
outstanding of somebody did this good and thorough of a job for prosumer
MiniDV and low-level pro camcorders.

 Shaun Walker http://OtterMedia.com Shaun@OtterMedia.com

.....

>Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but everything I've read leads
me to believe that Digital ICE isn't software at all: rather, it's a
hardware function that adds an infrared scan to the scanning process.
Most film dyes don't absorb in the infrared, so this scan picks up dust
and dirt (and scratches?) well, making it easy to subtract them. The
exceptions are one or more Kodachrome dyes and silver halide-based B/W
films (though not the C-41 B/W films), which absorb in the IR range,
rendering Digital ICE useless.

How can anyone report problems against any Abobe software when the feedback
area on the web site is utterly broken? I can't even send feedback to the
webmaster because the feedback refuses to send it.

Sending feedback to support results in the message being sent back to the
user that a message can't be sent to support without an authorization number.
Well, you can't get an authorization number until support responds.

Please let your bosses know that support needs support, as it is broken.

But, then again, you probably hear all the time that Adobe's current
support method is the pits.

It is nice to read that Adobe does know about this issue.

BTW, yes I do know that there is phone support avaialable for X number
of days after getting the product. So I suspect that this is how Adobe
has learned about the problem. Still, the web site feedback area needs
to be fixed and thoroughly tested.

I *was* using OHCI Pyro on a P2 BX board w/160M ram. Again, that system is
doing other duty now so any tests I run here would likely be irrelevant.
But keep in mind I'd been using MSP6 on that system for months with no
trouble at all.

Maybe. But when we shop for things we expect the listed system requirements
to at least be _close_. Adobe says 128M is all you need. If it really needs
a gig then that would certainly be a part of an informed buyer's decision.

Quicktime very choppy on the PC where .avi files are smooth.
As you could see from my list I don't have mpeg codecs available either.
Where would I find them?

MOst codecs can be found on the web somewhere... Indeo can probably be
had from Intel's site and Divx can be found in many places..

The problem is video for windows is dying and Microsloth will not be
supporting it much further... In premiere six you don't really need it.

What is the final destination of movie you're outputting? You might want
to consider MPEG or Quicktime...

How can anyone report problems against any Abobe software when the feedback
area on the web site is utterly broken? I can't even send feedback to the

Sending feedback to support results in the message being sent back to the
user that a message can't be sent to support without an authorization
number.

Actually, we learned a lot about it here, on the WWUG, on the Adobe
User Forum and via prembugs@adobe.com. We are still collecting data
on this, so go ahead and post details of your configuration to
mailto:prembugs@adobe.com.

Please note that just because your system is stuttering that doesn't
mean it's a bug on our end. Problems with smooth playback or capture
have been the number one problem since SuperMac DigitalFilm and
Radius VideoVision Studio came out in 1992. There are lots and lots
of ways to make a system have problems like this.

--Most playback problems are simply configuration issues, sometimes
software (like what Robert mentioned) sometimes hardware (People
using IDE cables instead of UDMA cables, or putting certain devices
on the same cable with the drive and the whole bus slows down, etc.).
These problems are usually best handled over the phone, otherwise
they take forever to sort out.

--We suspect that there is some fundamental incompatibility between
Media Studio Pro 6 and Premiere since many users have reported that
uninstalling MSP6 solved their Premiere playback problems. We are
interested in hearing from those of you who have experienced
something like this.

--We confirmed and fixed a genuine Premiere bug in PAL DV.

We are still trying to reproduce a case in-house where a system that
by rights should not have any problems (fast Pentium III,
defragmented 7200RPM drive, plenty of RAM, etc.) cannot play back
smoothly. If you have such a case, please send configuration
information to mailto:prembugs@adobe.com.

Where does one find all of the various Adobe bug e-mail addresses?
I don't remember seeing one in the FrameMaker docs. Not that I have
any bugs to report on that, because I don't. I do want Adobe to sell
a Linux version. I really loved the Linux beta version. Then the rug
got pulled. I sent a nasty gram to the beta user address. That is another
story. The latest PostScript printer driver has a very nasty bug in that it
prints "draft" on each page, even though it isn't turned on and I have no
idea where to report it. If the website worked, I could have that way.

Sounds like, from the forum, that I can call in via one of my other programs.
I have Illustrator, Photoshop, that I could use as an entry point. Speaking
of Illustrator and Photoshop, I don't remember seeing a bug address listed
for those programs either.

Sorry that this is off-topic, but it might benefit other Adobe users if
they have problems.

Thanks.

I never said it needs a Gig. I simply expressed willingness to go up to a
gig of memory if that's what it needs to produce smooth video. I'm willing
to buy my graphic artists a lot of memory if that makes their Photoshop
work faster and more enjoyable (it does).

If it is indeed a memory issue and if Prem6 needs more than 128M, then yes,
Adobe should say so. But this thread started with a blanket accusation ("It
will not, repeat WILL NOT export properly to any OHCI compliant device,
with any hardware configuration") of dubious pedigree, and that accusation
is patently wrong. There are many people on this list who do not have any
problems, and very few who have.

There have been reports from the get-go that the PCI latency has an
influence on 1394 performance on certain motherboards, and having been
peripherally involved with 1394 hardware since their inception, I can
believe this argument. (There was a BIG PCI bus related problem with the
first Adaptec chips of lore, may they rest in peace.)

There have also been reports that an updated msdv.sys driver helps.
Problems along these lines are documented at

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q252/1/85.ASP
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q260/5/44.ASP ("The IEEE
1394 driver (Msdv.sys) in Windows 2000 does not function properly in
computer with more than 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM ...")
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q271/4/64.ASP

The PAL problem is documented at

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q266/6/53.ASP

As Mike Jennings (who is a great guy with a lot of 1394 experience) said,
it could be a clash between MSP6 and Premiere. Both use their own direct
access to 1394, and as Mike said "many users have reported that
uninstalling MSP6 solved their Premiere playback problems." A clash between
rival apps is a common problem (there was a time when stupid multimedia
apps totally screwed up your system ..) and it is usually not detected
during beta testing.

Lastly, it could be a bug that only appears under certain circumstances
with certain hardware etc. As Mike also said, they've been trying to
reproduce it and failed. This also is a common phenomenon. Test machines
(and, to some degree also machines of beta testers) often gravitate to a
certain, orderly corner and can't completely reflect the chaotic world of
windows hardware and software.

I still remember (when I did the Premiere forum on Compuserve) a problem
with an early version on Premiere (forgot which one) where a few people
lost their complete project, because the file was corrupted. It affected
less than 10 people on this planet, but boy, were they mad. At Adobe, they
tried everything to reproduce the problem, but could not. It was crazy. I
sent word out to stop everything when the problem arises. Finally, someone
in Belgium had the problem. I was in Germany at the time, hopped in the
car, drove to his house and took a snapshot of his system. The very weekend
Nick had gone over the source code and found the spot where an errant
pointer could have caused the problem. I called him and yelled "I caught
one in the wild!" He said: "I already fixed it."

In Joe's case, we'll never know, because he destroyed the evidence
("Unfortunately by then I had disassembled that machine ...") Tech support
simply LOVES stuff like this.

plays with Windows Media Player. I would appreciate hearing if the Mac version of

Don't forget Linux systems. The video for Linux stuff is coming along and

As an interesting side note, I was reading in the latest TV Technology

running Linux. I guess they wanted to make sure that the TV transmitter

On my system, Windows prefers to install the Texas Instruments OHCI drivers, but the
card and DV device I have work better with the Microsoft drivers.

Go into Device Manager, select the 1394 Controller Properities. Go to the Driver tab
and select Update Driver. This will bring up a Wizard to try and find a better driver.
However, you already have installed what Windows _thinks_ is the appropriate driver.
Make the selection that you will specify the driver and click next.
Then there will be a selection to show you all the available drivers appropriate for this
device. This will likely show you two drivers, the TI driver and the one from Microsoft
(which IIRC is just labeled "OHCI compliant 1394 driver" or some such, but no company
listed).

The camcorder should show up under "Imaging Devices" when it is connected and turned
on. Firewire is a hot-swappable plug & play technology, so if you turn off your camcorder
it will disappear from the installed hardware list. Sometimes (especially with the TI driver)
the camcorder will show up under the Sound and Multimedia section.

If you want to use the standard MSFT drivers for the camera (shows up as a Generic DV
recorder) you may have to play the same driver-switching game as above with the 1394 driver.

Once this is installed, there may be a setting in the driver properties that says to
recognize "non-compliant" devices. Try checking this if your camcorder doesn't show up
after the driver change.

I dunno. Using both all the time I can't imagine anyone voluntarily giving
up MSP for P6, but more importantly I can't imagine why a not-running MSP
would interfere. Maybe in Win9x where system files could be replaced by
installing, but in my case P6 was installed last - long after MSP6 - and
it's Win2k anyway which doesn't allow that nonsense.

Actually, after this long thread today I just ran a quick test and it looks
like the problem is still there. Sort of. Specifically, Task Manager
reports memory usage thus (vm=Virtual Memory usage):
P6 - 17M+200M(vm)
MSP - 35M+76M(vm)
Eudora - 18M+11M(vm)

The above are while playing an avi I just captured in P6 (although P6
insists on stopping when I bring Task Manager up).

I know next to nothing about the inner workings of Win2k, but it looks like
P6 might start swapping with even a 256M system. I wonder if any of those
test systems at Adobe had the recommended minimum of 128M and if so what
total memory usage do they report during playback?

This is all very true except when using dv25 as an aquisition format for
broadcast, where I would argue that onlining via SDI to uncompressed is the
best solution; it avoids the transcoding artifacts that even 2:1 will show with
multiple layers and cc.

My understanding is that MSP installs a non-standard 1394 stack that the
DX-8 installer doesn't successfully replace. Admittedly, I don't fully
understand this specific issue, but it seems DX-8 and MSP6 play a bit of
tug-of-war with system components, on 9x and Win2k.

>Actually, after this long thread today I just ran a quick test and it looks

Does video play back correctly for you now?

Memory is not the problem.

The number you want to look at is the first one, the actual memory
footprint. As you can see, Premiere is actually using *less* real memory
than MSP6.

Premiere allocates a huge virtual memory space on startup for caching
images, video, audio waveforms, etc. This large memory space isn't actually
used unless you start caching lots of large images during a render. On
playback, most of it gets dumped, specifically to avoid any memory problems
during playback.

Some playback systems (older versions of are QuickTime notorious for this,
but better these days) pretty much like to have the whole machine for
playback, so Prem tries to accomodate whatever playback system someone has
plugged in.

>(although P6 insists on stopping when I bring Task Manager up).

You can set TM to float if you want to observe the memory footprint during
playback.

>I know next to nothing about the inner workings of Win2k, but it looks like
>P6 might start swapping with even a 256M system.

Nope. My Win2k development system has 256mb ram. I routinely run Premiere
while running about 3-5 other apps incl Photoshop, IE, Eudora, etc, and
swapping is minimal to nil, and DV video plays back fine for me.

Memory is not the problem.

>I wonder if any of those

Yes. (Memory is not the problem.)

What kind of color correction filters will be provided? The color
correction tools in FCP are pretty poor, with a low level of control,
so I was hoping these filters will be of a more professional quality.

Thanks.

re-post again. Thanks.

Has anyone on the list tried one of the Pioneer
DVR-2000? They are going for about $2,500 on ebay, and
it sounds like a great replacement for my aging 3/4"
non-SP umatic deck. Really aging...

I don't care so much about the menuing, as the disk
will contain a capture of a "live" 60 minute peroid
of time.

Do you know if it works with the cheap dvd-r disks?

Can I rip the disk to my hard drive (with a DVD
drive, of course) and edit the material?

 Thanks in advance.

On the plus side, it uses QT and once on the PC, any app that open QT is

You're the expert. But I know that previously when P6 started jerking and
stopped playback I could plainly see in Task Manager it was generating
constant Page Fault Deltas in the *thousands* (and climbing as I recall).
Clearly something was wrong - the system was so busy hitting virtual memory
it had no time left to do anything else.

Sorry I can't help you w/tapes in Cali, but I found protape.com has a
sale (for the last few weeks AAMOFact) on Panasonic 60 minute tapes.
They're $4.99, and they said they'd drop the price to $4.75 on qty. of
50.

Never bought from them, so YMMV.

I have seen FCP running on a D Desktop and it runs just like DV, seamlessly, better than the Igniter actually.

Offline your project in DV resolution then recapture uncompressed to finnish and add graffix. I have seen several of the Digital Voodoo systems running on IDE to SCSI raids, I can't
remember the manufacturer right now. Since the data rate is only 27-30MB/sec you can do this on single Ultra160 drives(scsi).

If you are useing a lot of graffix then it will make a differance. After using the Igniter card on a few projects I am not impressed by the lowest compression and it only captures 8bit.
The D1 Desktop captures and processes in 10bit. The CineWave system only processes D1 in 8bit and there is no compression on the board like the Igniter, it only does uncompressed.

Yes, I recall that this was the case on your old machine. It is not the
case on other machines with the same memory footprint. I don't know why
your machine was behaving differently than most -- and I'd really like to
