Dunno bout FCP in particular...but
I can fit about 20 Mins of DVD format on a CD
I can fit 1 HR of Constant Bit Rate DVD format on An apple superdrive DVD-R
If i upgrade ($1000) to DVD STUDIO PRO, I could fit 2 hrs or more at
Variable Bit Rate
Other formats than MPG-2 (DVD) are less compressed so resulting
capacities are much lower (eg full screen (640x480) QuickTime
would fit about 8 MINUTES or so of very high quality on a CD
while a DVD R could be used for 4.7 gigabytes of QUICK TIME at 640x480 and
30 frames a second (I've never done so muliply the cd (700MB into 4.7gig)

Well, the DV200/300 cards have their limitations, but I've edited several DV
shorts, a DV feature and a one-hour DV drama with mine. Given an infinite
amount of money I'd get a real-time card, but it's perfectly possible to do
good work with the DV200/300.

hi
if i had one of the cheapest capturing cards that is bundled with premiere
6, would i be able to produce a quality video production even though the
card lacks the real time capabilities of the more expensive cards? in other
words, is the major difference between these cards, real-time capabilities
or are there other factors to keep in mind when deciding what to buy?
my problem is that i don't want to spend all my money on an expensive setup
when i can produce the same end result on a cheaper product, even if i have
to spend more time doing it. at this stage, time is not an issue whereas
money is.
hope this makes sense and that there are some sages out there that can offer
some guidance.

Can,
It's great that your system is up and running fine. :-)
Actually, my standard response to almost ANY Win98 problem is to install
W2K. (I've been a W2K user and developer since Beta 1. Great product!)
However, most people don't want to hear this solution, so I've stopped
pushing it. It's good that someone else did mention it.
Best of luck in the future.
Regards,
Dan.

Hello: Although others may say different things. Cost although a factor in
business is not the real reason you purchase something. Example is a car.
Do you buy it for looks or use? Can you afford the cost to make it run on
the road ie insurance, repairs etc? This goes for the everchanging video
world. Cameras are nice to look at yet not used they only take up space.
Tapes, edit systems, mic's, lights, batteries have to be purchased and
repairs need to be made. I am having a Canon L1 repaired right now. It
will cost $480.00. The lens is still good. I had to make a commitment to
either keep the camera and get rid of it. As I hope you know camera people
themseleves do not repair in the USA if a camera is over 7 years old. So
you must pay for it outside and thus it is expensive or get rid of it like a
old car that no longer runs. Just make sure that you will use the camera
and equipment and it will pay for it self not just in money but the
creatifity of completing the work. Just one persons thoughts. Tughollow

you are right if you think you can save some money on a cheaper card that
comes bundled with Premiere! Yes, if you can render on you own time..the

the cheapest cards do not capture AUDIO..
if you are looking for a cheap capture card, do not go with one that is so
cheap it operates by using your computers sound card

To answer your question Cedric, FireStore can be put into a FireWire slave
mode where everytime Rec is pressed on the camcorder, FireStore starts
recording. You press Rec Pause, it pauses as well. When you start
recording your next clip, it creates a new file on the disk.
BTW, I like the Wireless idea!

My "cheap" OHCI FW Card captures DV audio just fine even using the analog inputs on my PC100. The few times I've used the audio line input on my ThinkPad to capture audio only it went
great. Maybe I'm missing something here, but my reaction to Clive's post was yes, a cheap card with P6 will do great work for you...spend your money on the camera and the mics if you can
live with the render time.

Theoretically you can hook a 2nd [or a 3rd] DV camera via the IEEE1394.
Practically I have experienced problems that are OS dependent. Most editing
software supports multiple video input sources from which you can select the
desired one.
However under Win2000, I have experienced problems where the edit software
'thinks" you have switched video sources but the same camera video is always
delivered. Under Win98 with same hardware/edit software everything seems to
work fine. If I use 2 IEEE1394 cards, one for each camera, under Win2000 then
the switching between cameras woks properly.
I think there is a bug in the OHCI default IEEE1394 driver that gets loaded
when the board is installed. I would be very interested to know if anyone
else has experienced these difficulties & if they were able to get around
them.

Subject: Win2K IEEE1394 Firewire Driver Bug?
Message-ID:
I have encountered a problem capturing DV via a Firewire which seems to be to
be a bug in the driver. Maybe someone who has more experience than I can shed
some light on the problem I am having. The same problem which occurs under
Win2K does NOT appear under Win98SE.
I install a IEEE1394 Firewire card in my Win2K system. Win2K automatically
loads an OHCI Complient IEEE1394 Host Controller. The card has multiple
connectors for devices and I connect 2 JVC DV video camcorders. The two
camcorders appear in the control pannel under "Imaging Devices" each as
"Microsoft DV Camera and VCR". Then I run the editing software which comes
bundled and the edit app shows the two cameras and under software control I
can select which camera input to view.
So far so good. However it does not matter which camera of the two I select
[in software]. I always get the same camera's video displayed. The software
'thinks" the video has been switched but actually it has not.
I know the problem is not the Firewire card or the Edit software because I
have tried several vendor's Firewire/Edit programs and the all exhibit the
same problem. Even GraphEdit & Amcap perform in the same manner.
Also I did EXACTLY the same thing on a Win98SE, same card, cameras, software
and there is no problem. Everything works 100% correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jasper Klausner

Yes, but probably only if you're using DV.
e.g. You'll at least need a cheap DV camcorder that can take analog inputs
(if you have old analog source material you're thinking of using).
Otherwise, you may run into problems such as the audio capturing someone
mentioned (no problem with DV at all).
Unless you go all the way to the pro level, cheap OHCI DV will give you
MUCH better quality than any analog solution at anywhere near the price,
and your OHCI card will still be useable in the future if you ever do get
tired of rendering and get a real time solution. The only difference in
quality among the DV cards is in the codec they support, but for all but
the most demanding (read: multi-source compositing) applications your
quality will be the same regardless of how expensive a card you get.
Note that Premiere6 is NOT your only choice for OHCI. Ulead's Media Studio
Pro 6 is much easier to learn and use - especially if you aren't familiar
with the odd Adobe interface. But P6 _is_ a year newer and much more
ubiquitous.

Great question. I recall when I was 'chomping at the bit' to do my own
editing I read about so many 'capture this' and 'render thats' that I felt
my head would explode. This is what I came to after several months of
research: You may want to check out www.adstech.com for the Pyro capture
card that is bundled with your choice of Media Studio Pro 6 or Premiere 6.
I have the Pyro capture card, I paid $80.00 bucks for it at Fry's
Electronics, (Best Buy Carries it too) two years ago and it has been a great
work horse. It came with a editng software and I upgraded to the MS6 by
calling ADS and I just upgraded again to Premiere at their website. I have
made content with this card that is broadcast on television. Your computer
has a great deal to do with render time too. My computer has a 733Mhz PIII,
and 512 (pc133 Mhz) RAM, 7200rpm hard drives on a RAID and the render time
is short enough I can deal. The trick is to render (push the "Enter" key on
the Window OS) as you build your movie. Then as you make changes the
program and card does a "Smart Render" which renders only the changes you
have made making the time you must wait far less.

Message-ID:
There is another choice for digitizing.
Instead of a capture card I bought a DV camera that takes analog input (a
Canon Elura). At the time I bought it, there were only one or two available,
but there are several now.
I take my source material (from VHS, 3/4" or BetaSP) and feed it into the
camera through S-video or composite and wallah - it's digitized (also backed
up on DV tape). From there I just capture onto hard disk thru firewire,
which is also built into the camera. (I use a Mac, so firewire is built in
to the computer, as well, as it is on most PCs these days also).
When I have edited and added whatever effects, etc I want, I just record back
to DV (again through built-in firewire on the camera) and I have a tape I can
make VHS dubs from, take to a dub house, whatever I need. It would be nice
to be able to record out directly to VHS or 3/4", but it just adds one step
and as far as I can tell does not compromise the quality. When the prices
become more reasonable, I am looking for a deck that takes firewire in, which
will be useful for "one off" videos.
The camera is a combination capture unit and input/output device. Not to
mention, I get to use it as a great little camera.
This also works for me as I have so many other cards and hard drives
installed that I wouldn't really have much room for another PCI card anyway.
Of course, if you don't have Premiere 6.0 and it comes bundled, some of these
deals make a lot of sense economicaly. I'm not saying this way is better, it
just made sense for me as I needed to buy a DV camera anyway and I already
owned Premiere. Actually, I was able to buy Premiere 5 on ebay (new, sealed
and unregistered - totally legal). A lot of people who buy the capture cards
already own Premiere and so they resell it.
Good luck,
B.

That's a great price. Are there any downsides I should be aware of? In
addition to the Mac I also run a Dell and having a capture card for it might
be a good idea.

Hi guys,
I've been off-list a lot lately - we've been filling orders for transfers
to VCD.
Now we are ready to cover the other end of the market down here and move
into DVD, but I have two questions first:
1) I have pre-ordered the Pioneer A03 burner (Yippee)....but I noticed that
it only has a 2 MB
buffer. Someone at Pioneer tech (I think) recommended at least an 800
CPU to prevent
buffer overuns, but that doesn't make any sense to me. I'm going to be
using the drive in an
old (but oh-so-stable) Asus P2BF system with a 550 CPU.
The new drive is supposed to write at 2X, which, I believe, is equal
to 8X CDR.
That doesn't seem to me to be fast enough to have buffer problems -
does anyone know
whether my 550 CPU will be okay ?
2) I am using Spruce-up to create the DVD's - I am a little concerned
that there have been
reports of incompatibility with Spruce-Up authored dDVD's and settop
DVD players.
Will Spruce-Up be addressing these issues in the next software
release, or can I get
past the problem by creating an image file and then using Prassi to
burn the disk ?
I was thinking of going to DVDit, but I have never been able to get
it to import my RT2000
files without problems.
Any info would be helpful,

Hi,
You can fit 74 minutes of MPEG1 on a CD (80 minutes if you are using an 80
minutes CD).
DVD depends on the bitrate:
at 4Mbps you can get a little over two hours
at 5Mbps you can get about 103 minutes
at 7Mbps you can get about 76 minutes
(Using a 4.6 gig DVD)

Much depends on how you want to use the card. The next step
"up", the Canopus DVRaptor, allows you to see a full-sized
smooth window of your video on your computer screen while
you edit. This is the card I and many others have. The step
after that is the Canopus Storm (or the Matrox card, or etc.),
where some of the work you do can be _immediately_ reflected
in your output (as opposed to taking minutes/hours to render
before displaying), which in certain circumstances can speed
up your editing. The step after that is the deadly serious and
deeply expensive editing hardware.
You will find that the big thing you care about is your editing
environment, rather than your card. The choices are legion.
I'd recommend deciding on Premiere (or deciding against it)
and then choosing a card to match it that's certified to work.

SP1 is yesterday's news. SP2 has officially been out for several days, and
from all reports seems mostly safe.
I just gotta ask though - out of pure curiosity - why/how is it you come to
have more than 1 camera hooked up at a time anyway? Certainly you can only
batch capture from one source at a time?
Since I can't imagine a scenario in any of our DV bays where this might
benefit us, I wonder if I'm missing something?

I don't use FCP, but since I haven't seen any responses from them, I just

I have two HD (IBM Deskstar ATA 75 gig) in addition to an original 30 gig
(Maxtor). My computer was purchased at Promax. It came with the Maxtor 30
Gig, a Turbomax card installed in one PCI slot with one of the IBM harddrives
attached to it. I bought the 2nd IBM, a cable and installed it myself
attaching it to the 2nd spot on the Turbomax card. It took me maybe 10
minutes to do it. I can buy another TurboMax card and two more harddrives for
a total of about 330 Gigs. Maybe attaching your drive to card would be easier
(unless that's what you've already done). I would also suggest that if you
buy a new drive make it the maximum Gigs possible (I think that's 75) because
once you're out of internal space that's it.
Best of luck.

Live with render time... check out The Consolidator a plug-in that
consolidates rendering and optimizing your workflow. I do a lot of rendering
and multi layering, stuff that goes beyond the capabilities of any real time
card so I developed The Consolidator to make it easier to live with render
time. With The Consolidator re rendering is drastically reduced. With things
like slow motion it can make life a lot easier.

There could be several reasons the drive is not performing
satisfactorily. I'm not an expert on Firewire drives so keep that in mind
with these ideas.
First, it could be software. What system are you running and which
version of QT? You should try to get the newest Firewire extensions,
which I think are 2.7. They should be part of QT 5 if your using that.
Second, it could be hardware. Firewire to ATA bridges in the harddrive
case are not created equal. The fastest bridge available now is the
Oxford chipset which is available form only a couple of venders. One is
Granite and the other is Other World, I think. An inferior bridge may
cause the problem.
I don't have Maxtor drives, and I don't want to be a rumour monger, but
I've read many stories about bad Maxtor drives. (Also a lot of stories
about how reliable they are.)
I think having the two firewire units connected to different firewire
ports is better.
The last thing is, Apple doesn't officially support using Final Cut Pro
with Firewire drives. Officially Digital Video needs 3.5 MB transfer
speeds, but you need that have drives that can sustain double or triple
that. Some people have used them succesfully, but it is unchartered
waters. Are you working with DV?
You can check on the speed of your drives read/write speeds with ATTO's
free Diskexpress-tools. Go to www.attotech.com click on "support" then
"downloads." Enter your name and email address and get DiskExpress-Tools.
There is a benchmark utility included in this for measuring the
performance of drives. I think it works with Firewire drives too.
Good luck, Jim

Plug-ins that do this are pretty expensive and are slow at rendering. There
are some interesting loops that you can just overlay to your video.
Check out this link:
http://www.ifstudios.com/pages/ScreenFrame.htm
These look interesting and the price is very good.
You can also change blending modes and add filters to get differing effects.
I am also producing a library of looped and not looped motion backgrounds
and overlays.
Some are graphic jingles others produce very unusual grunge and digital
techno rubble effects.
I also developed a plug-in to support the use of effects that require
rendering for Premiere that is called The Consolidator. Here's a
description:
The Consolidator is a plug in for Premiere that handles rendered preview
files in an advanced manner improving productivity while safeguarding your
work flow. The Consolidator consolidates premiere preview files by
extracting them from the project and inserting them in a new updated
Premiere project with these "consolidated preview" files placed on a new
video track right above the areas that they are a rendered representation
of. This drastically reduces re rendering. A very complex two hour Premiere
project with hundreds of preview files that could have taken hours or even
days to render, once rendered can be Consolidated in seconds, requiring no
additional video hard disk space. Thus hours of rendering can be safeguarded
in seconds.
If you doing effects like aged film, color corrections etc that are not
short transitions, but effects that involve the entire length of your clips
consolidating the resulting preview files is very helpful. You can pre
process your clips to add the effect and then edit them later. I pre process
a hundred clips in one Premiere project and use The Consolidator to convert
the preview files to regular footage and then import them to After Effects.
The advantage is that I set up one "pre processing" project to trim and
convert tens or hundreds of clips and get them out as separate processed
clips all in one rendering session.
For more info on The Consolidator and for a free 30 day trial go to:

The JVC-DVS2U is _very cool_, but not perfect (what is?). There are known
issues when using this deck with iMac/iMovie. Once footage is digitized,
to get the audio
to play back, you have to unplug the firewire cable. Audio loss has
also occurred intermittently when using FPC too. I hope that JVC and
Apple are working to correct this problem.
It would be great if JVC would make a model with a flip up monitor
and small speakers like the sony GV-D900.

Promax has told me that the firewire drive they sell is capable of
running two streams of DV (G4/FPC2.0/RTMac card) without issue. I've yet to
be disappointed with their information and suggestions.
Their external 60 gig drive is very cost effective IMO.
