You may remember my post a week or so ago asking for help resuscitating my
Sony PC4.
At the time, I suspected a charger fault, but discounted this by having it
checked out at a Sony
centre (thanks for the idea Gavin Bell!). Charger and batts were fine, do
the camera was at fault ... Aargh!
The camera had stopped working a few weeks after being DV-IN widgeted with
Datavisions PC widget. I hadn't had time to fully test this, and carried on
using the camera on a family holiday. On our return the camera had died. Now
I had a warranty invalidated Sony PC4 that was duff.
So .... I emailed Datavision; not expecting much as their literature points
out that warranty may be voided and its not a guaranteed process.
I was delighted and amazed by their response. Hours after contacting them,
they made suggestions to try and de-widget the PC4, when this failed tehy
said 'send it to us, we'll sort it and remember to insure the delivery, you
don't want to lose it' - service and care - remarkable!
They emailed to say they had received it, a couple of days later emailed to
say that it looked like the initial widgeting hadn't completed properly and
had corrupted files in the PC4, and then phoned to all was well and it was
being posted out. I had it back quickly and it works perfectly.
No charges, no attitude, no cynical re-distribution of blame just great
service.
Can't speak highly enough of them. Their support of a £75 product far
outstrips some other companies I (and I'm sure you) could mention.
Excellent work Datavision.

Message-ID:
Having problems setting up this card on a win2k laptop.
Inserting the card alone brings up the P&P wizard that install NEC OHCI
drivers from Win 2k.
The orangemicro install procedure says not to do this, but rather to use
their drivers. These don't seem to work under Win2k however, with the
installer reporting 'this system is not suitable' and asking for Win98.
Clicking through this error says v1.1 of OrangeLink is being installed, but
no drivers turn up in device manager or elsewhere.
Anyone else using this card? Is the install broke? Why do I need their
drivers anyway?
The system doesn't function with the NEC driver. I get device control and
can capture DV via Prem 6, but can't get it to export live over the
firewire. When the firewire is disconnected, playback of the captured DV
file is smooth and clear on the screen overlay. When firewire is connected,
the playback goes very poor (1 frame in 20 & no sound) and nothing on the
firewire.
Help greatly appreciated!

We have a customer whom are shooting map-pictures with several cameras from

later captured to a computer. Then they use several still-frames to create a
complete "mosaic" map in photoshop and could use this function to save quite

in more profits. People who need fancier QuickTime codecs could purchase
those separately as add-ins.<
I can sympathise with the sentiment but Keith has the wrong notion of what
Cleaner does. Cleaner doesn't use 'expensive QuickTime codecs', but the same
ones that you can access via QT Pro for $30. You pay for the extensive image
processing power, extra encoding control and batch file capabilities. The
only unique QT codec features are related to Sorenson Developer Edition
which needs Cleaner to control it. Cleaner does give access to some non QT
codecs like MPEG, Real and WMP which are included in the package although
these are pretty basic.
I think the real problem with Cleaner is that there are simply far too many
versions and options, and that these ought to be rolled into the basic app.
to justify the cost. It is caught between being a fully pro package and
trying to attract consumers, and along with the change of ownership the
marketing has ended up in a real mess.
Incidentally, there is of course 'Cleaner-Lite' which may suit Keith's
requirements.

On the Internet I have been looking at Sony PC9 and

which camera will satisfy my priorities, which are:
1) Still pictures - pref. mega-pixel or more
2) Mpeg facility - to send small mpeg's via e-mail
3) DV in/out - at a later time I would like to edit my

4) Software included!!??
5) Small, handy camera but still good quality
Thank you for any advice

Some follow up to my original post:
Here is what Xentrik (ViXen) and Synthetic Aperture (Video
Finesse) say about it.
"...- it's Premiere rescaling the frames before sending them to
the
filter when you are working in non-square pixel mode. We are
trying to
find a work-around for this, but in the mean-time we suggest you
change
your project settings to use square pixels. This is only the same
as the
way you worked in Premiere 5.x, but Premiere will expect to
re-render
all the effects with the new project settings..."
and
" ... It's actually a bug in Premiere 6. Premiere is handing us a
frame which
it has (unnecessarily) tried to convert to square pixels for us,
but it
does a really bad job of the conversion.
... You can also get around the problem by using only
square-pixel mode, but
that defeats part of the advantage of Premiere 6.
...[Adobe} are aware of the bug and are working on it, but I
don't know
when they will actually release a fix."
So I guess we go square (is that bad) or wait.

Sem to me that at half the bit rate they can spin the heads half
as fast, and thus have the same track pitch at half the tape
speed. So 2xSP should net to the same track pitch as SP and 3xSP
to the same as LP.
Quality wise, 2xSP sounds like it could be about on a par with
typical VHS, but with lower noise.

Hey everyone, delurking here.
Can anyone point me to resources/share advice on how to record 5.1 audio for
DV?
I have Logic Audio which I can use to mix a 5.1 soundtrack. Assuming I want
to record 5 channels of sound separately and mix them down, how would I go
about adding that audio to the DV images on a DVD through Premiere? If not
Premiere, which NLE would do the job?
Also on the hardware side - of course I'm limited to 2 mono 48khz tracks on
DV. Which recording device would be the way to do this? Can one record 5
audio tracks to a DAT tape, for example?
Many thanks in advance for the help.

Message-ID: <2.2.16.20010704092243.138fcfc6@ccconline.net>
Hello Everyone.
At the end of last year I purchased a Canon ZR and I am trying to get it to
connect to my Sony VAIO PC (PCV R553DS) running Windows 98 Second Edition.
However, the PC does not "see" the camera. I have connected a Kodak Still
camera via the Firewire / i-Link connection satisfactorily and the boards
show no problems. I have swapped cables and am confident that I am using
good cables.
Calls to Sony and Canon indicate that neither of these companies are really
interested in helping to solve this problem.
Canon's tech help line folks tell me that Canon DV Cameras do not have
drivers, that the PCs should recognize it as a "default DV Camera" and
support it natively from Windows, which is not happening.
Sony's response is along the lines of "We find it almost impossible to
believe that someone sells a camera intended to be connected to a PC without
proper drivers. Surely there's a mistake on the part of Canon. Take it back
and go buy a Sony"
At this point I am open to suggestions.
I have tried to use the Drivers archive DriverGuide.com and found a driver
(DV_Camcorder_driver_R3_0.zip ) but when I try to use it, Windows rejects it
saying "no information about the hardware was found with this driver."
So I am open to suggestions. I have done everything I can think of, but with
no luck.
Thanks,

Hi everybody!
First of all for those of you from US, I wish you have a nice 4th of July!
But now back to business. Went to local SONY store another day and noticed

Right now I own DCR-TRV110E PAL digital8 and my question is regarding this
Mega Pixel feature. Is there any difference you can actually notice when
comparing footage shot with those two or some other cameras where one has
this Mega Pixel and other one is "plain old" one? Ok, TRV730 has also some
other nice features but I'm mainly interested in picture quality.
If any of you has any experience in this question, I'd be more than happy to
hear all your comments regarding this issue because I'm trying to make a
decision whether to upgrade to TRV730 or not.

I downloaded a demo copy of Media Studio Pro an looked at a bit. Seemed
like a nice package. However, I purchased Premiere with my Pyro card.
My choice was Premiere because it is much more of a standard (if there
is such a thing) on the PC and Adobe has more market presence. This
results in more support, more books on Premiere, more articles in
magazines using Premiere as an example, more training materials, etc.
This is the same logic that I used when I got PhotoShop. First I
purchased PaintShop Pro V7.0. Nice product, but finding resources to
learn how to use it was difficult. PhotoShop (like Premiere) has many
ideosyncracies. But you can find the info to solve your problems.
So, while Media Studio Pro may (or may not) have advantages over
Premiere, the support, reference and learning resources are no where
near as good. Sad commentary, but that's the way it is.
If I had to buy a hardware platform and was choosing between Premiere on
a PC and Final Cut Pro on an Apple, I'd probably go with Final Cut Pro
for the same reason - avaiability of resources.
Frankly, I find Adobe's standard user interface a bit cumbersome in that
it doesn't use many of the Windows standards. That said, I'd still make
same purchase decision.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Dan.

Nope, a Pentium II 400MHz with 128MB of RAM running Windows 2000.
It's my "older" video edit machine that I used to run Premiere
5.1c on. I've since bought an 800MHz AMD althon based system
and switched to using EditDV for actual editing.

Ah, you said the word "daughter card". This thing is doing DV25
to MPEG-2 in software. It takes a while!

Compared to my regular render time for complex caption supers in
the DV world, this doesn't seem that out of order to me. You
try rendering anything (say a burnt-in bug thoughout the program)
entirely in software and you'll get this kind of number.
I might one day get a hardware board, but for now I'll just have
to wait.

Better yet if QT compression is all you're doing try Totally Hip's HipFlics
- it's a nice bridge between QTPro and Cleaner5 compression. Good range of

Subject: RE: Premiere 6.0 Bug? Not exactly and workaround.
Message-ID:
When working in non-square pixel mode Premiere rescales the frame when
delivering images to a plug-in. It is essential that a titling or
perspective effect plug-in receives a scaled image or the effect will render
"ovalized" or squashed horizontally for PAL and vertically for NTSC.
Plug-ins should be able to retrieve the frame without this rescaling. For a
plug-in like Vixen that basically does color corrections the aspect ratio
will not affect the outcome of the rendering. These plug-ins need to be
modified so as to retrieve a non scaled frame.
The workaround of setting your project to square pixels when rendering vixen
or video finesse will work, but any other rendering will be wiped out if you
need to switch back and forth. You will need to switch to non-square pixel
aspect ratio to do titles, rotations etc etc. I have developed a plug-in
called The Consolidator that consolidates preview files so that they do not
need to be re rendered and can't be lost by accident. You can use The
Consolidator to consolidate your preview files before modifying the aspect
ratio setting.
You can download The Consolidator from our site www.premieretools.com
(windows only for now) and use it for free for 30 days while a fix is made
for these plug-ins. I think that apart from using The Consolidator as a
workaround for this particular problem you will find it useful in everyday
editing.
Here is a general description of The Consolidator.
The Consolidator is a plug in for Premiere that handles rendered preview
files in an advanced manner improving productivity while safeguarding your
work flow. The Consolidator consolidates premiere preview files by
extracting them from the project and inserting them in a new updated
Premiere project with these "consolidated preview" files placed on a new
video track right above the areas that they are a rendered representation
of. This drastically reduces re rendering. A very complex two hour Premiere
project with hundreds of preview files that could have taken hours or even
days to render, once rendered can be Consolidated in seconds, requiring no
additional video hard disk space. Thus hours of rendering can be safeguarded
in seconds.
The Consolidator is available for Win98/ME/NT/2000
Cheers

I've got the 1380 head with the carbon fiber legs, for
use with a Sony DSR250. The springs are not
interchangeable after the fact; you have to order the
one you want.

I can't get a new A0-3 and the ADS(Pyro) disk kit (1394 adapter box) to be
seen correctly by WIN2k at all.. I tried 3 different 1394 adapters (but not
a Pyro 1394 card). The drive is seen... shows up in device manager but has
a yellow "!" ... and error message "cannot be started". The MS driver for
storage devices is installed correctly... but its not talking to the drive.
PYRO says on their site that it is compatible with the A0-3.... not here
though.
Anyone else tried this? Gary? (videoguy).
Perhaps there's a trick. The same box works just fine with a hard drive in
it. Pretty clearly there's not an appropriate driver being installed....
or maybe its a firmware update (my box is a year old)
let's keep this thread open and see if there's a solution.. or other box
that works. I've got a message into Pyro...

It seems to crash DVD-it when you import anything other than a CINEPAK at

I had a ZR10 with my Sony J100 computer and it worked
fine. But when I tried to sell it, I got alot of
emails saying there was something wrong with that's
model's firewire port. I was able to sell it but I
didn't know about this problem until people started
emailing me. The problem maybe in the camera.

No way. My ZR10 has worked flawlessly with several different NLEs. But
there are known issues with Sony's 1394 implementation on the VAIOs.

I was thinking of using the SCSI drive just for a
scratch disk for small projects and the 40 gig IDE for
larger projects.
On DV Decks as the price is so high would it be worth
it to wait for DVD R's to come down in price and
wouldn't they be a better solution for outputting
video?

Hi Tom
The pyro box I have came with a little utility to switch the box from Hard
disc mode to CD-Rom mode. My guess is that you need to switch it to CD-rom
mode.
You can download the utility from the ADS site. Good luck

The same box works just fine with a hard drive
in it. Pretty clearly there's not an appropriate driver being installed....
or maybe its a firmware update (my box is a year old)
let's keep this thread open and see if there's a solution.. or other box
that works. I've got a message into Pyro...

Well--I stand corrected. Thanks for that info. I found
absolutely nothing about user interchangeablity in the
paperwork with the head. That's good to know.
By the way, this head is better than it has a right to
be. Amazingly good for the low price, in my opinion. I
bought it for use with a fairly light weight DSR250,
but it works well for my significantly heavier DSR500
also, and it weighs a fraction of the old O'Connor 50.
Much nicer to carry around on location.

Looking seriously at getting a few Matrox RT2500's for work stations
here in NZ. Anyone got any good / bad comments about this card?. Also,
who's the best to buy from in the States?.
Thanks.... Steve

I'm using the RT2500 with great success, it's easier to setup over it's
older brother the RT2000 and it allows you to install whatever video card
you desire.
You will not have any problems if you follow the hardware recommendation
list on the Matrox site, I have the Asus P2B-D with dual PIII 600 and 1 gig
ram running Win2K, and is extremely stable.
If there are any specific questions you need to ask me, please feel free.

Hello: I would start with B&H in New York and compare them to the two that
sponsor this chat room. Then at least you will not pay a large price.
Their are others wchich are excellent when one needs much support. The

Message-ID:
Just finished cutting a voice over (35 minutes long original, down to 14
minutes) using Soundforge on my Sony VAIO. The problem is that although this
was an extremely simple task (which I used to do routinely on Soundforge),
this time EACH CUT SEGMENT was taking almost five minutes each to delete
(probably due to the length of the raw wav file). This was when the file was
still very long, but of course this delete time got reduced to less than a
second as the file got cut down.
I had seen a ProTools system cut a voice over just a few days ago, and it
was VERY VERY FAST, not like the Soundforge system I was using, which only
got quick when the file was cut down. I understand that the ProTools system
uses its own board (correct me, someone, if I am wrong), which probably
accounts for its speed, but IS THERE A SOFTWARE THAT CAN MATCH THIS SPEED
out there?

Yes, when shooting live events, etc. But he's shooting a feature, which is

factors as humanly (or economically) possible when shooting a feature.

extremely stable motherboards.

http://www.soltek.com.tw/English We got them because others here RAVED
about them and I have to admit, they are bloody stable!. Incidentally,
the reason behind looking at the RT2500 is for the analog import export
feature (realtime conversion to DV). We've been using those "Hollywood"
bridges which under Win2K are of limited success. Turns out they work
better with MAC.

True. But, you can take a deck that can play said tape over firewire and
record it on my DVCAM deck, since the video format will be DV :-)
A deck that can play SDL DV over firewire that does so in native format will
not record on my DVCAM deck.

Subject: Firewire problems - JVC HR-DVS2 dual deck
Message-ID: <5.0.0.25.2.20010705000317.032907e8@mail.mindspring.com>
I'm having firewire problems with my new JVC HR-DVS2U dual deck (DV &
SVHS). With Premiere 6.0 (Windows 2000, ADS Pyro 1394 PCI), I can't
successfully record to either the DV or SVHS deck. With the SVHS deck
selected, Premiere reports that the deck won't record and suggests
(erroneously) that the tape cassette may have record disabled. With the DV
deck, the deck responds initially to the firewire commands (I can see the
timecode change and record/pause modes engage), but no recording is made
and the deck eventually shifts out of record mode or records nothing. I
tried this about 10 times, with PC reboots and deck restarts along the way.
With the same PC setup, I can plug in a Sony VX2000 or Sony GV-D300 deck
and record immediately without incident.
I'm wondering if this JVC dual deck actually supports recording at all to
the SVHS deck, which I thought was one of the new features from JVC with
this year's model. As for the DV recording, it just seems flakier than Sony
gear. There's almost no documentation for firewire recording, and the deck
forces the user to manually set some settings in advance for the deck to
recognize firewire input at all. With the Sony gear, it's just power up and go.
I was able to perform a dub from DV to VHS using the internal JVC dubbing
circuitry, but even that was balky at first. With a brand new DV cassette
with a fresh DV recording (made with the VX2000), the JVC deck failed to
display a picture on several initial tries and gave pixelated results on
others (along with the suggestion from the deck to use a cleaning
cassette). Finally the deck played the cassette and dubbed it to VHS (a
decent dub).
So far, I'm not too impressed with this deck. If anyone has any ideas how
to solve the firewire problem (or could at least confirm their successful
use of firewire connectivity with a PC), I'd appreciate the feedback.

OK I'll bite what is SDL DV? I know about DV, DVCAM, DVCPro, DVCPro 50
these are the only DV25 type formats(except for DVCPro 50) I am aware

Quoting a previous posting:
SDL DV (defined in section 6 of the spec) is subsampled 3:1:0
540 luma pixels per line; 180 chroma every other line. half the bitrate.
It is a different compressed format, it is lower quality, and not
many cameras implement it (some Canon ones do).
Canon calls this LP; others may call slower tape speeds LP;
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/dv/data/2001_fv20_s.html
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/dv/data/2001_fv20.html
Canon's new FV20 utilizes a new data-compression format that enables
the high-density compression of recorded images to make possible 3x
extended recording. When using an 80-minute DV tape, for example, the
feature permits users to record and play back four hours of footage,
realizing extended carefree shooting without having to worry about
running out of video tape.

Let me expand on what Fred said:
Premiere isn't doing the wrong thing here, although it looks like it may
not be doing the right thing as well as it should.
Here's what's happening:
If a project is set to a non-square aspect (e.g. DV 0.9 aspect), and a
plug-in needs to be called that cannot handle non-square pixels, the video
frame is squished or stretched to a square aspect. The resulting
square-pixel frame is fed (one field at a time if we're field processing)
to the plug-in, and the result is re-integrated into fields and
stretched/squished back to non-square aspect.
Why is this done? To make sure any plug-ins that use geometry render a
correct result. For example, the Lens Flare filter (which is a Photoshop
filter that only handles square aspect pixels) would render oval flares
instead of square if the aspect wasn't corrected before a frame of video
was sent to that filter.
Which plug-ins need to be fed corrected-aspect frames? Most do not; only
plug-ins that generate geometrical shapes(e.g. lens flares, titlers, a
round iris transition, etc) need aspect correction.
How does Premiere know which plug-ins need to have corrected frames sent to
them? The plug-in tells Premiere that it can or cannot handle non-square
pixels. If the plug-in cannot handle non-square pixels (or if it doesn't
specify), then the frames will be corrected before being passed to a plug-in.
If the plug-in doesn't want this to happen, it can specify that aspect
isn't important, and the frames will not be corrected before processing
happens. Additional details of what plug-ins writers need to do to make
this happen is available in the Premiere 6 SDK at
http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/gapsdk/PremiereSDK.html
Why does the plug-in writer need to tell Premiere how to handle aspect
processing? Because, until Premiere 6, there wasn't a way to describe what
sort of frames (square, non-square) the plug-in could handle, so Premiere
has to assume that plug-ins that do not specify a preference must require
square-pixel images. The alternative is to assume *all* legacy plug-ins can
handle non-square aspect, and the geometry of all of those older plug-ins
would continue to be incorrect.
It sounds as though some of the plug-ins being described (someone mentioned
Vixen & Video Finesse...? -- I haven't checked them out specifically on
this issue, so I don't want to draw a conclusion here) need to just tell
Premiere they don't care about aspect, and the frames passed to those
plug-ins won't be touched before being processed by the plug-in. That
having been said, I don't know if these companies have been in touch with
the Adobe developer support folks about this issue, and can't say if
there's some reason why this sort of fix can't or won't work for these
plug-ins.
There are plug-ins that *do* generate geometry, and cannot handle
non-square pixels being fed to them. In this case, the Premiere plug-in
host must pre-process the video frame to correct the aspect before it is
sent to that plug-in. Since (in the case of DV aspect) the frame is being
squished from 720 to 648 pixels wide, sent to the plug-in, and then stretch
back to 720 pixels wide again, some softening of the image is unavoidable.
Let me repeat this: going from non-square to square imaging and back again
will soften the image. This cannot be avoided.
All of that having been said: it looks like Premiere is not doing a very
good job of round-tripping the pixels when going from non-square to square
and back, and more horizontal softening/blurring of the image than is
expected is occurring. AND, some vertical softening and shifting is
happening as well, which should not be the case. I'm still researching
exactly what's happening with this case; I agree the current result is not
very acceptable.
So, to sum up:
- Plug-ins that are used in non-square (notably DV) projects need to tell
Premiere if they can or cannot handle non-square pixels.
- Apparently, some plug-ins (notably some color-correction plug-ins that do
not generate geometry) that should tell Premiere to ignore aspect are not
doing so, so they are being fed corrected-aspect frames unnecessarily,
which is causing unnecessary softening of images.
- In the case of plug-ins that do not want or need aspect-corrected frames,
I suspect this issue is easily fixable on the plug-in side, but I have not
examined any 3d party plug-ins to check this issue, and have not been in
contact with these plug-in vendors.
- In the case of plug-ins that generate geometry and *must* have
square-aspect frames, it appears that Premiere could do a much better job
of ensuring a good 'round-trip' from non-square to square to non-square
aspect. I'm still looking into this part of the issue.
Hope this helps.
