Parallax scanning

Here is a very interesting video describing parallax scanning, which produces an almost 3D image on a 2D plane by moving the iris within the lens.

I couldn't see any 3D effect from this, yet the guy was claiming it would work on any TV???

That's what he said.

I went into this really hoping to find a new exciting development in 3D. I may be totally missing the point but...

I went their site to view the 'amazing' demo footage. Doesn't seem to be 3D in any way at all. Just looks like a shallow depth of field image where the background has a distracting wobble. Like a new version of jellycam but added deliberately! I can't imagine what you would want this effect for, and believe me, I'm a nutter for anything 3D.

Am I completely off base? anyone getting a 3D image from this? If it was nearer April I'd have thought I was getting rickrolled but the site looks real.

Try the 3rd clip here

It's not stereoscopic 3D, it's just a foreground/background separation technique. It's certainly not as good as just using depth of field and selective focus.
That sample clip looks like a badly-tracked green screen composite - very unnatural.

Thanks. It is not true 3D, just an illusion of depth. It actually seems quite distracting since the eye is spending too much time looking at the background.
