DIY 3D camera

I own FX1E. Can I get another and hook them together to get 3D? Or can I use some attachment?

Depends on what you mean with "hook". There is lots of systems to record 3D video (better lets say stereo video, because I do not know what do you mean 3D exactly...). You can record it interlaced, or full frames. Based on system you will use for projection. Two projectors with polarised filters is the best way imho. So better do not record it interlaced.

Daves,

Stereo or 3D is same thing. Problem is my FX1E camera is HD (HDV) and lens thread is 72 mm. Is interlaced. I don't think interlaced type uses one projector?

Better say Stereo, because 3D camera can be for example set of couple cams, filming scene in 3D (like used in Matrix). And not just this case. So Stereo is just a type of 3D.

You can use just one projector, with LCD glasses masking your eyes.

Next important question is editing software...

Radek Svoboda June 29th, 2005 05:58 PM

That explains display technology but not how modify camera system to shoot 3D, stereo, or whatever.

I use two identical cameras for my 'double' 35mm adapter (one for the left and one for the right part of the frame to get a double rez)
I start and stop them with one remote and they start at the exact same frame and time. No synch trouble. So if this works with the FX1E too you could make a setup with the cameras on óne tripod separated at the distance of two eyes (or a bit more).

Radek Svoboda June 29th, 2005 06:24 PM

You have done this?

Oscar Spierenburg June 29th, 2005 06:38 PM

Not 3D, but I made the 35mm adapter to get double resolution (and DOF of course) and it works every time. Stereo would be somewhat the same setup only much easier. The thing is to get software (like Vegas) that splits the captured footage in separate takes. This way the shots will have the same starting frame and edit easily.

i dont think this has been mentiond, sorry if it has. you might be able to do this with one camera if you use adapters like these

http://www.stereo3d.com/stereocam.htm

basically it takes a camera that records interlaced and every 1/60th of a second it records the image off mirrors to change the perspective slightly. You have to watch the footage with shutter glasses that flicker so each eye only sees the odd or even interlaced frames. maybe you already know this, but it seems like a fairly effective method to me, assuming it can easily be used with HD as well, i figure it works on any camera that has composite video out and the glasses work on any display as long as the source can [also] output a composite verson of the video. I guess im not sure if the fx1 has built in automatic downconverted video output through composite. If you are projecting, are you playing directly from the camera's component out? what are you using to play the video? i suppose this would work as long as whatever it is also has composite out.

Note there can be compression problems in interlaced stereo video. Better way is to shoot full not interlaced frames with two cameras, like Oscar do. And then use two projectors with filters. What are next plans, Radek ? If I plant to watch at home on computer (I would choose interlaced & masking LCD glasses). If I plan to projecting it for more people (I would choose non interlaced two cameras and polarized glasses).

There is 3D kit for DV cameras to 37 mm filter size, I think. It includes LCD shutters and mirrors to separate view of each fileld. I would like figure out how get something like that for FX1E, or how synch cameras and lenses for 2-camera system.
