Scorsese's "Hugo" in 3D

I was fortunate to be in attendance at a special pre-release screening in 3D of Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" this weekend.

Like many readers on this forum, I spend 1/2 of my viewing time watching a 3D film with and without my 3D glasses on to see how the filmmaker has positioned the screen plane.

In this film, Scorsese has pretty much thrown out the "big 3D" look except for a few large area shots in favor of a much more nuanced and subtle approach to depth. Basically, the 3D effect adds depth to the characters more than to the sets. I find this refreshing and an innovative new method of storytelling.

I am pretty conservative myself in setting overall depth in my 3D projects, so it was a revelation to observe one of the preeminent filmmakers of our time use subtle depth and cues to craft such a visually lyrical story.

As for the film itself and story, well I left the theatre thinking that this was the best Spielberg film Spielberg never made. It's a nice safe film to take the kids to see for the holidays.
