Today the new Moviestudio 12 has been released.

There are some important changes - for s3D the most important change is (to my opinion) that VMS is now available both as 32 and 64-bit application also - what should improve stability.

I work on a Mac/FCP, but before we switched, we were big Vegas users. There are still things I like about Vegas over FCP. I'm thinking about purchasing the Panasonic Z10000 in the next week or two, but I want to have a solid work flow figured out before making the purchase. Do you know if Movie Studio 12 will allow me to import the files, split them up and then export them back out into something that FCP will play nice with? I have a gaming PC (Quad core 3Ghz, 8 Gigs of Ram) that should have enough horsepower to do it in a reasonable amount of time.

Yes, you can import Z10K files in VMS - I do that by myself.

Workflow? Depends what kind of workflow you are looking for.The export from s3D footage from VMS can happen in different formatsExport can be done as separte L and R file, it can be done as side-by-side half or top-bottom- half with different encoders like the Sony AVC encoder, but also as sbs-full or top-buttom full with the Mainconcept AVC encoder. That are examples.

But I do not know what can be imported in FCP.

If I can get it out as two separate files, I will just need to find a compatible format. Someone suggested downloading the Avid codec for the PC and letting Vegas export to that, then import into FCP or MPEG Streamclip. I might download the demo and see what happens.

DNxHD or P2 works well going in and out of FCP7, I've used both interworking with Edius, although there is also the option of using the Canopus HQ/HQX codec with Edius as Wolfgang points out (free, just like Avid's DNxHD). No real problems with these on a Mac with FCP and of course it means Quicktime Player and Preview will play all these formats as well.

You can never have too many codecs...

I've just gotten my Z10000 and I'm also in a MAC / FCPX. This is the biggest pain in the butt!

Here's what I'm doing so far:
1: Capture video
2: Load onto a PC
3: Convert all footage with 3dtv.at - MVC to AVI Converter
Note: A 58 mb file will turn into a 3 gb file x 2

This is where things get hard

4: Bring all HUGE files to my mac
5: Transcode ONLY the footage I will use in edit to Prores 422 - Use mpeg stream clip
6: Bring all transcoded footage into FCPX
7: Edit

I'm heading to the computer shop today to find a way to get the HUGE avi files to my MAC. I'm hoping to get the PC to convert the MTS files directly to a raw external HD, which then I'll plug right into my thunderbird enclosure.

Hang on a second.... Do I understand that I can import my Z10000 (MTS) files directly into Vegas Moviestudio 12, then export a single left / right file?

This would be perfect! Can anyone confirm that I can do this?

That is what I am understanding. The Vegas workflow seems to be the best bet (if you have a PC sitting around). Are you using the Dashwood software?

I sent my JVC HMZ1U back to JVC for them to look at. I was having quality issues with it that I didn't feel I should be having. If it comes back in the same condition, I'm getting the Z10000.

I'm using FCPX with the Dashwood LE, which is sweet!

I just returned from the computer shop and the conversion as I stated in a previous post will NOT work well, but I'm going to try one option later.

I'm going to try running windows in bootcamp, and download the trial of vegas.

This is all so very frustrating.

Yes, you can import the Z10K files directly into both Vegas Pro 11 and also Vegas Moviestudio 12.

Yes, you can export L and R in separate files, if you wish to do so. That could be done with the Sony AVC-encoder, but also witht he Mainconcept AVC encoder - or to mpeg2. So there are a lot of options. You could also go to the Cineform (if the codec is installed in your system), or to the Canopus HQ(X) codec (here you have to take care about the luminance range, here you have to adjust the codec in the registry).

I assume that all of that could be imported then in FCP or FCPX, for example there are also free Canopus HQ and HQX codecs for the Mac now.

The other question is: why not edit the footage in Moviestudio directly? But that is up to you.

You should capture the footage with the "Device Explorer", that is part of Vegas. Using the Z10K and the usb-connection to the PC. And then you can export the L and R file.

I downloaded the trial on my son's computer and will try to make my way through it.

It imported my MTS file just fine, but I'm having a bugger of a time trying to figure out how to get it to be stereo / 3D, and then export the left and right files.

Will work on it tonight.

Tony - any reason you are not using the Panasonic utility that came w/ the Z10k to split the MVC files from the camera into 2 H.264 files?
