alternative lens/letus rod support?

i've seen the cavision rod support system for the minidv but they've been out of stock for a while at bhphoto... do you guys recommend any other alternative brand? I could not find any on google, msn or yahoo searching for rod systems and such. thanks!

Hi Guys,

I am looking to have a knockoff version of the 15mm Cavision support + shoulder extension machined for me. As far as I can tell right now, the price only makes sense if 10 or more people go in together on it. If I finish the design and it appears to be cheaper is there anyone out there who would want in on it? The support system would be made of aluminum and steel and take standard 15mm rods and use wing nuts for adjustments and to tighten it all together.

you could try ordering from cavision themselves. i think they're based in canada, and they might be a little more expensive than b&h. from what i recall, you get a pricing sheet from them and place your order via fax (yep... old school). the rods might be a little short for what you're looking for. if i fit my xl1s, lens, a 35mm adapter, and 35mm lens onto the rails, i don't see there being any room on the rails for the included mattebox. a camera like the dvx or gl with a smaller form factor would probably be fine. if you end up with the cavision kit, you can purchase longer rods from any number of places as they are standard 15mm.

r.p., what camera do you have?

ill be using the rods on my hdr-hc1 with a letus35 flip, follow focus & mattebox (if all goes well).

i decided to just order straight from cavision since i expect my letus35 to be here in a week or two.

btw, dan has some 12" and 16" 15mm rods for $16 and $20 respectively

I have access to some carbon rods which, I believe, are 15mm in diameter and 42" long. A local supplier of surf board fiberglass has them. They are just under 5/8", so that should be 15mm. I don't have a precise metric measuring tape, so they may be off by a hair. They are actually called 1/2" rods, but they went by the inside diameter and the wall thickness brings them up to 19/32". I believe this makes them within 1/100th inch of being 15mm.

I plan to cut two of these rods down to 26" and put a pad on one end, the camera in the middle, and the letus/monitor/35mm lens on the other end. On top of the shoulder pad, I am going to mount the battery for the monitor.

If anyone is interested in long carbon fiber rods, I could look into that for you.

We have few ExDemo and B stock plate+rods kits left. The plates can be mounted on standard camera plates (e.g. 501) or used as QR plates with the standard Sony VCT-U14 QR plate.

I can supply them with longer rods, 18" from camera screw.
