DivX quality issues in PPro

Hey guys,

I installed the DivX codec and Dr. DivX today, trying to export some videos from PPro to Stage6, to show you guys a bit of my random stuff for feedback. :)

I tried exporting straight from PPro to DivX, and even at max quality settings I get lots of really nasty youtube-esque artifacting. Stage6 also gives an unknown error when I try to upload 'em. I couldn't find any setting that gives even reasonable quality, and I've seen some very nice work posted on there through this site....

I then tried exporting as Cineform HD->SD downconvert, Cineform HD, AVI Uncompressed... all of these give files unreadable by Dr. DivX. They follow the same thread as Stage6... "unknown error".

Any hints on a workflow that will simplify my life here? I'm using the community (free) version of the codec, PPro 2.0, AspectHD.

Thanks in advance,

Carl

PP2 does not work with DivX. Export in the same format you captured, for instance from MS-DV AVI type 2 to MS-DV AVI type2 and use another program to convert.

Thanks, I'll try some more formats! Would AE perhaps work with DivX? I've had hell getting Dr. DivX to read anything I've exported, and don't really want to invest on software just to export to Stage6. ;)

Thanks again!

Carl

DivX or Xvid are highly compressed formats not suitable for editing and Adobe CS3 and CS2 hate it, so AE will also have problems. Elements may be more suitable for such consumer formats.

Aye, I finally got it to work by rendering out a DV AVI from PPro and bringing it into Dr DivX, and tinkering with lots of settings I shouldn't have had to touch. All I wanted to do was be able to upload to Stage6! :)

Now I can share some of my random stuff with you guys for feedback, tis all I wanted! ;)

Thanks for your help!

Just to let you know, Carl, I just rendered out a full HD 1080p XviD in a AVI wrapper and it looks great. We also did .divx outs in 720p and they worked and looked great too. DivX/XviD may be compressed greatly, but they look very good and it's a good way to show off HD from a laptop to HD projector, as they run well and are much smaller.

We did use a full CF 1920x1080p AVI (24.9GB!!) and ran them through TMPGEnc using the AVI and DivX exports (one as XviD, other as normal HD DivX)

Compression was 24.9GB > 1.37GB and 656MB respectively. Results were worth the 2 hr renders.

Awesome to know!

Thanks, Stephen!
