Brightness & Quality of Firewire & exporting

Hi
I use cs2
I had a video which was pretty low light. As soon as I added a video effect to lighten it up the quality deteriorates. Is there a better plugin although when I seem to change any variables the quality goes.

I use an xh a1 and capture via firewire. Is there better ways to capture and if so why?

I export in Microsoft DV AVI. Should I be using a better filetype/codec.

Many thanks in advance

What video effect did you use?

The best solution would be to re-shoot, the second best may be levels.
