CS5 Premier-Rending Issues

For some reason once I render, SAVE and reopen my project, about 30-40% of my clips need to be re-rendered. This has been happening on a few projects in Premier in the past few weeks. Has anyone come across this?

Can't guarantee this will fix the issue, but try cleaning the Media Cache Database, freed up 90GB on my C: drive when I did this!

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 & CS5.5 * Move or clean the Media Cache Database

If I may ask,

What useful function does the media cache serve?

Is it safe to delete it's contents and when?

Is it a temporary dumping ground/storage place?

What impact does it have on a project after the contents are deleted and I have to use the project again?

Thank you.

I'll try this but I'm using a 2tb external hard drive with about 500gig left.

thanks
