Editing 10bit material in 8 bit timeline.

Hi
I record some of my material in AVCIntra 100 which is 10bit. When I put it into a 8 bit CS5 premiere timeline will I still be able to adjust the material as if it is 10 bit. Will i still have the 10 bit levels usable?

I believe that Premiere's internal processing is well beyond that, running at 32-bit internal calculations.

Just use a timeline that matches the resolution for the project and see how you go.

And remember to click "render at maximum depth". Otherwise the rendering is limited to 8-bit.

Not all effects are done in 32-bit. Those that are are clearly marked to the right of the effect's name in the effects panel. You also have a toggle button to show only 32-bit effects at the top of the panel.

Additionally, you don't need to click the "maximum depth" button if you have a supported NVIDIA graphics card that is being used by the mercury engine.

See Adobe CS5.5 Max Render Quality & NVIDIA GPU acceleration for in-depth details.

Andrew, I think you're confusing the "Maximum Bit Depth" setting with the "Maximum Render Quality" setting. The former still needs to be selected in the sequence setting dialogue to support high bit depth processing of effects as far as I know.

Ahh, I think you are right. Maximum render quality is what I was thinking of.

Mind you, I think Premiere would be calculating in 32bit space as much as is allowed by the bit depth of the plugin. We do have an Adobe rep around here somewhere. He might be the one to answer that one conclusively.
