Sharpen filter

Hi folks, I'm interested to know whether its common practice to use the Sharpen filter to get crisp image quality on videos shot on DSLRs and other HD cameras. I cannot seem to get sharp and crisp results directly off the camera but applying just a little sharpen in post seems to do the trick. Is this method standard practice and advisable?

Re: Sharpen filter

I have heard of folks having pretty nice results sharpening footage shot with a 5DM3... I think some even apply some sharpening just before encoding to hopefully counteract some of the sharpness lost during the encoding process.

At least with Canon DSLRs the mkIII is the only one I'd apply sharpening to. All the others alias pretty badly and sharpening any bit just brings that out. I've done a 2% sharpen on my xf300 a few times and it really pops. Depends on the situation though...there are some people going in front of my cameras that I'd rather not see every pore or hair on their face! Ha ha! And even though it's miles better than the DSLRs, the 300 still shows aliasing in certain situations.
