Lightroom 5 is on the street

Either as a perpetual license (upgrade $79, or full $149), or free as part of Adobe Creative Cloud, Lightroom 5 hit the street today.

Adobe Application Manager hadn't yet auto-notified me, but clicking the download link on my Creative Cloud subscription installed v5 alongside my existing 4.4 without any hitches. I hadn't gotten around to downloading the public beta, so I'm looking forward to trying out Smart Previews, among other new features.

Pete, I love how you say 'free' with Creative Suite. I'm not knocking it, and will be signing up for a full subscription on the 17th, but I'm assuming they are not now giving it away. :-)

NO, LR5 is NOT free with Creative Suite! It isn't part of Creative Suite at all. Like several other valuable tools, the latest version of LR is offered for free (as in "ZERO additional cost") as part of a Creative Cloud subscription. If you have no Cloud subscription...you pay if you want LR.

Doesn't run on 10.6.8 on the Mac. Needs 64 bit and a Mac Pro running 10.6.8 will not run the package. Be forewarned. It will entail additional software upgrades and costs. Is it worth it? Only your IT Doctor can know for sure (G).

I'm not a fan of Apple so wouldn't have noticed, but per the specs page that's true. It is 64 bit software and requires OS X 10.7 or higher:

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 Tech specs

Installed it on my main editing PC and laptop, both Win 7 x64, without a hitch. I processed and delivered a small series of photos using the laptop over my lunch hour today. Worth it for me!

Originally Lightroom 4 was not provided as part of the Creative Cloud subscription. They added it sometime after they launched CC (& after I had bought a copy of LR4).

Too bad that you missed them saying that they'd be adding Lightroom:

Maybe it isn't so bad to have that extra license, though, as they seem to be sticking with perpetual licenses for LR. I still have my LR3.x license lying fallow as I refrained from upgrading LR because I knew it was coming to CC. But, I may pony up the $79 upgrade to the perpetual license just because I can.

I don't feel too bad as I bought LR4 as a birthday present for my wife before they launched CC subscriptions. She wouldn't have been so impressed with the promise of a CC sub.

Ha! Indeed, in certain situations, timing is everything! (Which, to go a bit OT, is the point of my rant in another thread about Encore).
