Capturing video with miniDV cameras

I am currently using my Canon XL1 to capture video into the comuter.

I am wondering if a $350-$700 miniDV consumer camera can be used as a deck to import / capture video with Adobe Premiere Pro 1.0? I am looking for a way to save the head and other parts from wear and tear when capturing the video. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jon

A decent new or used single chip camcorder is fine to read tapes to your computer. DV25 stream through firewire is the same data that you are currently capturing via your XL1.

Cheaper than a deck and saves wear on your big cam...

Name brand ... panasonic, Sony, JVC et al...

Thanks Jimmy,

Your comments make sense. I just wanted to bounce the thought off of someone else before I purchase another camera. My issue was that I wanted to make sure that the camera will be recognized by Premiere like the XL1 is. Thanks for the quick response.

You could even try and find a camcorder with a broken lens (for exemple) for very cheap... It would do the job just the same.
