Creating the "Bleach By Pass" look.
 

Hello, I'm currently using Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 to edit. How do I achieve the bleached by pass look? What have I have been doing is this: Adjusting the contrast and brightness, lowering curves, and dropping down the saturation. The only movie I can think of off the top of my head that has this look is Saving Private Ryan.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Looks like the perfect job for the Magic bullet plug-in.

One expensive (and lazy) way of doing it is to buy the Magic Bullet plug-in and Adobe After Effects, as this comes with a preset of the Saving Private Ryan look.

There some after effects tutorials which show you how to make a bleach bypass look without any plugins. If you dont have after effects, you could still probably apply it the premiere, because i think it just uses curves and some other basic image effects.

This is what I do:

1) Put clip in video1 track
2) Put a copy of clip in video2 track
3) On video2 version: apply Black and White filter
4) On video2 version: apply Levels filter: move the input black knob to the right and the input white knob to the left, in order to increase contrast. You can also change the gamma
5) On video2 version: apply Screen Key filter

In the Video2 version make sure that the Screen Key is the last effect, otherwise this will not work properly. Because of the screen key, the top layer will affect the saturation and contrast of the bottom layer. You should really push the contrast of the top layer. Play around with the settings of the Levels filter until you get the effect you want. You can also adjust the contrast of the Video1 track clip to taste.

That's a good deal. A buck 49 for some of the best artistic filters out there.

First, you need to register your PPro. Then follow the instructions for the free plugin. Once installed, there is a hyper link for 5 bonus looks in the effect controls window. Easter egg! You'll want the bonus looks because as I recall this is where Black Diffusion resides ... the most useful of the lot...
