Handling noise for handheld mike
 

I am using a AKG D790 mike for audio recording directly to the camera via XLR cables (PD 170). The problem is handling noise. The slightest bit of rub on the cable or on the handle part of the mike results in significant/obvious handling noise.

Is there any way around this problem? I have an interview of sorts coming up and we'll be traveling in a van providing descriptions of neighborhoods, etc. With the movement of of the vehicle and potential hand shifting, there will be noise.

Any suggestions?

Generally, that handling noise issue is endemic to the particular mic, there is not much you can do to reduce it.

A suggestion would be to go with an industry standard handheld dynamic, like the ElectroVoice RE-50. It is pretty decent sounding and does not having a lot of handling noise. I have a couple of really cheap older EV dynamics and they have the same effect, they are really only good for putting onto a podium or a mic stand, they are terrible for handheld work. Fortunately, in my work, I never need handheld mics so it hasn't been an issue but when I used to do events, I rented an RE-50 when needed.
