the first time I used my pd170 with the ECM-NV1 mic in a loud environment I did experience clipping. I switched to an audio technica AT-897, and haven't had a problem since. I work as a crew chief on a top fuel blown injected motorcycle that makes 1100 horsepower, and lotsa noise. I stand within 5 feet of the bike with the camera when it launches. we use the audio and video for technical data. A helpful tip has been to run the mic into both channels, and set them at different volumes, to lessen the chances of the camera itself clipping.
Hope this helps.

woa...that would be loud. My situation is not nearly that bad. I need to overcome shouting crowds at live events.
