The use of headphones on a shoot is to monitor the sound level and quality and listen for external problems. Most shoot conditions won't allow you to develop a detailed and critical estimate of the sound. There is just too much going on too rapidly.

I have to use earbuds with my on-the-shoulder camera and I don't have any more problems (surprises) than (or less) than when I wear my hardshell headphones or my Sony noise-cancelers.

I think the critical and focused (mental focus) ear is more important than the particular model and brand of headphone.

Why do they call them headphones rather than earphones?
