Guy, yes the metal body. I haven't tested the NT3 for that but RODE have and say don't remove that body. You're not operating the mic as per their instructions, you're open to RF, dust etc. and you'll void the warranty as well.

As you know mics are tested with all the covers in place to get the polar specs the designers want and guarantee.
