Standards

I took a one day film class and they had a field mixer. It was a Sure and they said it was the "field standard" mixer(just like the sm57 mike is the live performance standard...no arguments please). Does anybody have any idea what mixer they would be talking about?

Shure FP33.

and I'd argue that the person saying that was old school and out of touch.

The mixer that puts a 33 to pasture is a Sound Devices 442.

Agreed - the Shure has never been the standard.

In the UK the SQN was the standard - with the Cooper and Filmtech often popular.

But the current standard, as Ty said, does seem to be the SD 442 - an excellent piece of kit.

John, et al

not to say I don't see 'em out there in ENG bags during media scrambles, but they are not new.

I reviewed the 442 for MIX in 2002. I held off buying anything for 6 months because I knew the 442 was coming out.

Here's my 442 review.

FWIW, The SM57 is the standard instrument mic - especially for guitar cabinets. The SM58 would be the standard vocal performance mic. ;)
