Which format?

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question about my back up audio recorder.I was wondering what is the best format to record in.There are a bunch of options. there is pcm 48 or 44.1khz.then there are multiple mp3 options 320,192,128,64,32 kbps.I'm using it with a audio technica lav.And I'm editing with fcp s2.Any help would be great.I have a shoot tomorrow.Last shoot I just left it on pcm 44.1khz.

Thanks!
Ryan

The usual way is to setup for 48khz and 24-bit if you can.

Thanks Jeffery,

Is the pcm 48khz the way to go then? It doesn't give me the option to change the bit rate, but I can put it in 48khz.Thanks again!

Yes, PCM is a standard wave file and 48kHz is the video standard audio sample rate. Recording at other sample rates requires conversion when it is mated to the video in your editor - recording at 48kHz eliminates that step.

I'd suggest avoiding MP3 like the plague, no matter what bit rate. The compression can do very weird things to sync when you try to mate it to video.

Thanks steve!

I really didn't want to use mp3 so I'm glad you mentioned the pcm thing.I'll keep it at pcm 48khz.Thanks for all of the help guys!
