Documentary Sound

I know there is already a lot of info out here on this topic and I've read a lot of it, and Ken guided me to this section for this question -

What would be my best bet for microphones in shooting a documentary consisting of a fair amount of interviews in controlled, sit down environments, but also with some on the go stuff, following a subject around etc.

I'll be shooting on a GL2 and would like to keep my sound budget at $500 - With my incredibly limited newbie knowledge (can newbies have knowledge??) I was thinking of going with an AT897 to use both camera mounted as well as hand held and/or boom if necessary, along with some sort of lav setup -

So I'd appreciate any thoughts on what you think would be a good set up and your reasons for it - And thanks in advance for the experts out here who take the time to respond - I only hope that once I gain some experience and know how that I can return the favor - Take care all...

For your budget, the 897, coupled with an 831 lav, you'd be able to do most anything in this described use. I'd not mount the 897 to the camera unless you have no other choice, stand mounting, closer to talent, is usually a better option unless it's run n' gun.

I'm demonstrating some of these tools and how they work/sound on the VASST tour, c'mon down and check it out!

Douglas - Thanks for the response and recommendation -

Do you do any seminars in the Boston area? If so when? If not, do you know of a good organization where I could get some instruction on sound techniques?
