Boom vs. Camera mounted for mockumentary
 

I have an Azden SGM-2X that I'll be using in conjunction with a Panasonic DVX-100p to shoot a short mockumentary. I'd really like to eliminate the sound guy position so I can work as a one-man crew.

I'll be shooting one person in one environment (an apartment). Could I get away with a camera-mounted mic and get a good result? How much better would it be to use a boom operator? (especially considering I don't know anyone who is specifically familiar with audio-for-video, and I'm reluctant to spend money on someone who does...)

You can get away without a sound guy, but you'll have to plan it out to get the best sound.

The easiest way is to just do a straight interview with the cam fairly close up and use that as the sound track. Then get footage, where you and the subject are free to move about the room, and mix it all up in the edit.

Cheap wired lavs like the ATR35s have a long enough cable for most apartments and lets you get the mic right up close to the subject - while still leaving the camera free to move around. You can have both the Azden and the ATR35s attached.

You could also try planting mics around the room, out of sight of your shot. It takes a little more planning and some booms, stands, and clips.

And if you've got Vegas - use the noise reduction feature - it's like modern day magic :-)

Ahhh the cheap wired lav idea is perfect! That's often what they do in documentaries anyway, so why didn't I think of it?? Oh yeah, that's right, I know almost nothing about video sound! Thank you good sir!
