Audio Clipping only after capture
 

I did a shoot today. I check all my audio levels....everything looked fine. I listened through earphones the entire shoot.....never heard anything but crisp audio. I'm using a Cannon HV20 as my deck. When it plays, the audio sounds fine. I am capturing via HDMI through my blackmagic card, converting from HD to Pro Res. Once it plays through into FCPS2 one channel is clipping pretty bad. I recorded using two wireless lavs. In scenes with two talent I can cut the clipped section down and the other mic picks up just fine. However I have some clips with the clipping channel only that I really need. What can I do?

This isn't meant to be an answer to your problem (although there's a small chance that it might be), but rather a comment on your workflow.

I don't know if there's an advantage to capturing over HDMI instead of Firewire. The HDMI output of the HV20 is great for getting an uncompressed signal while the camera is recording, but once an image is saved to tape, it's already been compressed so the HDMI output of the compressed image is no different than the Firewire output. That's been my understanding, anyway.

So on that note, have you tried capturing portions of your video where the audio is clipping through Firewire instead of HDMI?

I concur with what Glen posted, Try a Firewire transfer.
It also may be a result of the conversion from HD.
If that fails, the audio "may" be salvageable using an audio Clip Restoration plug-in.
