Why it doesn't sound like film...
 

I was reading the thread on sound like film, and I almost did an off-topic reply. oops.

So, I just started a new 'excuse' thread. Sometimes, like last night reviewing my final cut of my drum corps DVD, I feel totally inadequate when it comes to video and sound. The shots with mixed levels, the speaker turning away for important, but almost inaudible dialog, the too close cuts because I almost missed the moment turning on the camera and pre-amp...

For some of us, we need to remember that when we compare ourselves to film we must realize that film has closed sets, the broiling crew/talent because there are not fans, generators, buses, or A/C running, the after production sound work, and foley work. :) Waiting for everone rolling to yell 'action', a script, storyboards, and someone holding my sandwich.

I have to remind myself doing event work in run and gun mode that I do not have control of the situation, I am not working from a script, and that I am not allowed to yell cut and ask for a retake. BUT, I am trying to do better. :)

At the Vancouver International Film Festival I sat through around twelve different DV productions. One was a full length feature shot in China that was decidedly amateurish. Then I saw ten films from Japan (one 20 minute horror film and 9 funny shorts) that were all pretty good. All were shot on video. One of the key differences in terms of quality between them was audio production. The Japanese films all had very good audio mixing, used boom mics (or other focussed sound recording) and some probably made use of ADR.

I have a video of the cymbal ensemble world champions (Spirit) shot across a room over the head of a crowd. I also 'misuse' my A-T 835ST as an 'interview' mic. ;)

I'd love to write a long reply, but I"m on dialup for the next week and it's damn painful. 14.4 in Washington DC.
Anyway, it's mostly eq, compression, and automated eq settings that does a lot of this. If I remember to look at this again after the Government Expo show is over...

George that was really cool. I'm not an audio head but it sounded good to me. As if I was in the crowd.

That performance was awesome too.

I'd actually responded to this same/similar thread yesterday.
If you'd like more, I'll take the time out to write more, pending the discussion in the other thread not having been enough.

Was it in the film thread? OK. I thought you might have had something specific you wanted to mention. Will reread other. :)
