Sony releases WAV converter for HiMD

http://sonyelectronics.sonystyle.com/walkmanmc/wav.html

It specifies that only files made through the mic or line analog inputs can be converted. Whether or not this applies to files made with an AD converter through the optical inputs seems unclear to me.

I believe this works on files created via optical port. I downloaded this, but don't have any optical devices here. What I do know is it won't pass files with DRM in the stream.

That would be very good news. Now if only there was Mac support!

There has been a 3rd party .wav converter out for months: Marc's Hi-MD .wav converter. It does the same thing as the .wav converter (faster than realtime upload), does convert digital optical transfers (sony can only do analogue) and also it does not have an auto, non-disable-able 650mb auto file splitting as sony's does. If you are using this for video sync, having it auto split certainly doesn't make the process any easier. The one plus that sony has is that it does not have the possibility of glitching in the same way that Marc's does.

Sorry if I sound a bit biased, but sony really dropped the ball on this one and the minidisc community has picked up the slack. Check out http://forums.minidisc.org and you will find a download for Marc's utility in the Hi-MD section.

This is (both Marc's and Sony's fast converters), at least for the video oriented audio recording fans, a big reason to embrace hi-md as one of the cheapest higher quality recording mediums.

/end bias. (I love my NH900 -- it gets used everyday for lecture recording)
