AT 899 Mic: Going from Wired to Wireless?
 

I am considering finally getting the Audio Technica 899 lav. Currently, I need wired sound -- I would like to be able to go wireless in the future, but AT offers two different versions of the 899: one terminated for wired sound, another for wireless.

If I buy the wired 899 now, will I be able to go wireless in the future? If so, how difficult will it be? Will I have to go with the U100, or can I make it work with another wireless setup?

One option is to get the AT899 terminated with a TA5 connector. The ATW-U101 accepts this type of connector. Then buy the TA5 version of the Mark 3 Power Supply from Equipment Emporium to power it. This will cost you a little more than the AT powered version but you will be able to use the same AT899 with either kit.

Good resource!.. Also, don't know about other mic makers, but you can order Countryman mics with The Link. The Link is a joined male/female set of connectors in the cable before the hardwired power supply. You can unplug to plug into your wireless body mic directly, or use The Link for hardwired use.

Thanks, Ryan. Interesting... So, it would be AT899 wireless, plugged into the Mark 3, then the Mark 3 plugged into (and powered by) my DVC80?

Does anyone have any experience with the Mark 3? Does it introduce any noise or cause any loss in quality?

This set-up would only cost about $60 more than getting the "wired" AT899 ($199.95 at B&H) -- can any other folks give it the thumbs up?

EDIT: Oh, and I take it that the Mark 3 is unique to Equipment Emporium? That how the description makes it sound, at least...

If when you say "AT899 wireless" you mean an AT899 terminated with the TA5 connector, then I think you have it right. The AT U100 accepts a mic with a TA5 connector.

The Mark 3 takes a AA battery or accepts 48V phantom.

Since I haven't actually used a Mark 3, I can't comment on the performance.

Has anyone used a Mark 3 Power Supply from Equipment Emporium? Are there other power supplies that can be used to hardwire a lav with a TA5 connector (LectroSonics, others)?

Yes. It's just faster to type "wireless" than it is to type "terminated with the TA5 connector," just as it's faster to type "wired" than "terminated with a TA3 connector."
