Recording Live- Seperating Audience from Talent

Hey all,

I was watching Comedy Central this afternoon when I started wondering how the sound is set up at live comedy things like stand-up comedians or Mad TV.

I might be wrong, but it seems to me that the best way to record audio at such an event would be to try and isolate the talent as much as possible for one stream, and then capture the audience clapping/laughing in another. This would allow each to be refined seperately from the other for best post results.

However, thinking back to the Dave Chappelle show I went to I can't imagine being able to keep audience laughter out of the talent's audio stream...

How's this work? Thanks!
