a good mic for a boom mic

Hey i was wondering what type of mic you all would recomend for a mic on the end of a boom? Most of the shots will be outside interviews. Thanks

What mixer and/or camera will you be using it with?
What's your budget?

Fernando Maldonado February 25th, 2005 02:24 PM

we will be running it into a ma-200 pack on a xl1s.. we have no mixxer. our budget is around 200 dollars. we have no mixxer what would you recomned.

You'll need a mic that can run on internal battery power if you stick with the MA-200, it doesn't supply phantom power.
Rode has two new shotgun models that should be available in March. Their prices are currently advertised around $230.
The lowest priced battery mic currently available that I'd recommend is the AT897. It's between $250 and $280.
Do you already have your boom pole? A shock mount? Better wind protection? All that will add up. Along with good cables and good headphones.
There are lower cost mics available for booming, but they aren't very directional and aren't ruggedly built.
There are good quality vocal mics that can be hand-held very close to the subject's mouth for street interviews that will fit your budget if you decide booming isn't what you want to do right now.
The lowest cost good stereo field mixer is the PSC DV ProMix 3 at $495. There are others available from Rolls, ART, Behringer, Samson and others, but they lack important features for field recording in order to be lower in cost.

Jay- What about the AT55?

Jay Massengill February 27th, 2005 01:56 PM

The ATR-55 is a very low cost, very low quality mic. It works, but I'd never recommend one unless the circumstances were very odd.
